One of the lessons I discuss in "On Tyranny":
Listen for dangerous words.
Text card: Listen for dangerous words.
Be alert to the use of the words extremism and terrorism. Be alive to the fatal notions of emergency and exception. Be angry about the treacherous use of patriotic vocabulary.

Hell, fuck it:

Give the UK ID Card project to the 🇫🇷 Agence Nationale des Titres Sécurisés (ANTS), IDEMIA, and La Poste while you're at it

We'll do a better job and have been running ID card systems for decades while you brits have been crying about the illuminati coming to steal your jaffa cakes

So maybe everyone should lobby against Palantir having a role in the project, rather than lobbying against the incoming UK ID card system?

I don't object to an online ID card system.
I object to Palantir having anything to do with it.

My card is physical but there is a database that it is combined with. I don’t find it has any downsides, nor does anyone I know.

Yes, but I love not having to download and print bank statements or utility bills that are less than 3 months old with my name and address on to prove my address. I just get my physical ID card updated at my town hall in Germany.

My hunch is that Starmer is personally quite Labour soft left but has been convinced by advisors and career path that he has to cosplay a caricature of forms of Yorkshire or Midlands cultural conservatism he doesn't really understand

I‘m at a bit of a loss as to why they are starting with a digital version only. For older members of society a card would be easier, ie dual system. I live in Germany & use my ID card to prove who I am & where I live on rare occasions needed. Not needed to print off a utility bill for years.

Keep thinking of arguments for why it would be completely insane to dump a prime minister with a huge majority just 14 months in, and also about how if he's not going to say a single word in opposition to the kind of shit we saw today then I no longer feel convinced by any of those arguments.

The obvious response if Trump II doesn't lift the visa ban is to hold the UN General Assembly in Geneva.

As someone living in Germany, I can attest that external shutters & inward opening windows, which also tilt, are amazing for keeping heat out in summer & warmth in in winter. Better for sleeping too, as rooms remain dark and external noise ⬇️. Cleaning outside of windows easy too. No brainer really👍

Too much attention in Europe being paid to Trump's incoherently futile diplomacy and not enough to his dangerously destabilising actions in US domestic politics

To talk about trade in Britain without mentioning the EU is a bit like trying to explain the solar system without mentioning the sun.

Absolutely not, black cats are wonderful - and very lucky. This young lady is modelling her post-op collar and bringing much joy to all around her (and chaos too 🫣😂).

Genuine question: is there any way out of this Brexit mess without another referendum? If not, and given changing world circumstances, might it be time to do the grown up thing and just get on with it? Political cowardice is never rewarded.

I agree! My car is about the same age but one always has a slight nag in the stomach till it’s pronounced healthy 😂

Snap! I had my biennial TüV this week too - also thankfully no problems 👍

Labour & Tories feel to me like yesterday’s people superglued to yesterday’s ideas. World changing around them but can’t talk to electorate about changes coming down the line & how to prepare for them. I wonder if, by 2029, it will be Lib Dem’s v Reform & effectively a referendum rerun.

Anyang Museum in Henan Province finished restoration on a local tomb mural depicting a black and white cat (note the bell collar!).

Belonging to official Zhao Yigong, the tomb was completed in 829 CE; it's thought to be the earliest Chinese tomb mural of a domestic cat.
#caturday
The image is a fragment of a burial tomb mural depicting a cat. The artwork shows a black and white cat sitting upright. The cat is facing to the right and its tail is curled around its body. The mural has a weathered appearance, with visible cracks and a rough texture.

Sending hugs and hope that‘s an end to it! 🤗

Being a Brit living in Germany I was stunned and delighted to wake up to beautiful sunshine on a holiday weekend! Sorry 🫣
