In the past before a ceasefire took effect, Israel has engaged in waves of strikes to try to kill as many people and bring about as much destruction as possible in Gaza at the last minute.

We’ll see if Israel does so again, but the dangers for those in Gaza (including the hostages) aren’t yet over.

I mean, if Superman could fight the Klan in radio dramas when the Klan was much more active, they sure as heck are a fair topic for a video game now. Any one upset by the idea is self-snitching.

If you think a game about going after the KKK would be controversial due to the current political climate, it's a good sign you should make a game about going after the KKK.

If teachers are told using AI technologies creates time to spend developing relationships with students, and the report’s findings suggest AI technologies undermine these vital relationships, then it seems to me resistance and refusal of AI technologies is the most caring response.

“One of the negative consequences AI is having on students is that it is hurting their ability to develop meaningful relationships with teachers, the report finds. Half of the students agree that using AI in class makes them feel less connected to their teachers.”

I've been collecting articles on the negative productivity impacts of "AI" for a while, and Philipp Markolin finally got me to gather them up and write a post about them. This is mostly about the productivity claims for "AI;" the technology has other problems, but I'm not addressing them in the post

…Let me say that again: Expert coders using "generative AI" demonstrated a nearly 20% *increase* in their time, vs when writing code on their own; oh, and those increases are *worse* on the tasks with which they have more familiarity.

But that's not even the crucial part; this is the crucial part:…

I'm writing my dissertation about this (in a sense). the idea of having "potential" is a promise made on one's behalf that you had little hand in making, but are then obligated to carry out. it is a form of indebtedness to adults. children should be children.

oh, this is delightful. I am writing about the assignment of "potential" in education and this is a great example. not everyone need to be a Nobel laureate, but his story certainly makes the point.

I tell my students about how I quite literally ran away from university the first time.

His mother, in particular, pushed for other opportunities based on his interests and abilities. Which of course made a huge difference.
