We don't know who this Black man was who Jan Mostaert painted in Haarlem in the Netherlands around 1525, but his fine clothes, manner and sword indicate clearly that he was an important person.

Black people were present and visible in the European Renaissance.

I can’t emphasize enough that it’s not a compliment to an artist to tell them that their work makes you want to quit drawing or hate your own work. Like shut that down before it even comes out

There's an interesting problem in digital preservation, which is that preservation only exists actively. Only the things you actively move to new formats, survives.

Community is probably the same way: it has to be actively maintained in order to outlive whatever spot it's currently in.

On genAI and art: "A machine can ostensibly produce the same results as a basketball player, throw a ball in the hoop and score points against other machines. But [...p]eople don't watch sports for the concept of throwing balls in hoops, people watch sports for human spectacle and physical ability."

14,000 Disneyland workers organized and won a 31% raise after threatening to strike.

It’s their biggest ever wage increase.

We are witnessing a historic rebirth of worker power, and I couldn't be happier to see it.

Take note: There's strength in a union.

Lost in the ongoing Trumpapalooza is the excellent news that a malaria vaccination developed at Oxford Univ. over the last 30 years and costing only £3 per shot is being unrolled in malaria-prone countries. If it fulfills its promise, this will make an enormous difference to so many lives.

Fuck yeah dude
I’d say “never say you love The Last Jedi in public” but fuck that. Share your love for whatever movie you want in public. Movies connect people and it’s weirdos who want you to be nervous for talking about them.

I hate how seen this makes me feel
The ADHD urge to set a reminder on your phone to help yourself go to bed on weeknights at a decent time, and then the ADHD inevitability to start reflexively dismissing that notification every single night but never bothering to turn it off

This applies to, like, literally everything. Mess up at work? Don’t say “well, I forgot to do X because I’m a fucking idiot.” Instead try “I forgot to do X, so I’m doing it now and making a reminder so I’m less likely to forget in the future.”
The most important artistic advice I can impart on people is to stop saying self-depreciating things about your work when you show it to people. Break the habit, it’s not funny, it’s not cute, it’s impulsive self-harm we do to try to take away the power other people could have to bruise our egos.

Yeah it definitely can be very productive so to speak. But I also try to avoid thinking about rest only as a tool to raise my productivity. Rest just for the sake of rest is equally as valuable and OK and you do not need to "earn it". But yeah it's a tricky balance to maintain as a freelancer

Important reminder for historical using art as visual evidence! We know that art is an interpretation of reality, & that it incorporates the biases of the artist, but there are other reasons art may differ from reality! Like the logistics of replicating clothing colors in paint.
Blues, however, were pretty easy. Woad and indigo were common crops.

The thing is, blue PAINT was near-impossible owing to the lack of good pigments. So blue clothing almost never showed up in art, despite being SUPER common irl.

Like, almost the only blue garments you see in medieval art are the robes of the Virgin Mary, painted in lapis lazuli ("ultramarine") blue, a pigment so difficult and rare it was literally worth its weight in gold. Contracts for paintings declared the exact weight of gold and blue to be used.
