Remember when the Obama administration decided teenagers & young men were "military aged males" or legit targets for drone assassination?

Obama's normalized & institutionalized war on terror policies & practices. The constitutional lawyer turned pres brought impunity not accountability & now this
“I found their justification for what they’re doing so flimsy that it makes the case for the Iraq War look like a slam dunk,” Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., said on Morning Joe. interc.pt/4nRmHVf

This is one my all time favorite books & writers. Mayer is really underappreciated essayist. This book on fascism is like Studs Terkel meets Wilhem Riech
From Milton Mayer's "They Thought They Were Free"

I first read it in November and I'm rereading it now. It crushing feeling the exact same things as this academic did. It's the same process.

The free speech activist who built a list of professors he worked to get fired for their speech must be celebrated for his support of free speech, and anyone who quotes his speech accurately in context will be fired and/or face state punishment by the champions of free speech, do I have that right?

Why celebrate May Day?

This year, in taking the streets, we are showing each other who is prepared to fight:

"Take a stand—we'll be there, too."

Every year, we are showing that we are part of a story greater than ourselves, stretching back centuries.

Life reinventing itself in defiance of death.
The May Days: Stories of Courage and Resistance
A century and a half of rebellions, uprisings, daring escapes, and adventures celebrating May Day and our collective capacity for freedom and self-determination.

I wrote for New York magazine about deportations to CECOT in El Salvador, which are bound up with a tradition of US extrajudicial actions in the Americas and further the long arc of concentration camps.
Trump and Bukele’s Concentration Camp
CECOT is no regular prison. It is also a warning.

Global military spending rose to US$2.7 trillion in 2024, a 9.4% increase over the previous year—marking the largest annual rise in recent history and a nearly 20% surge over just three years.

This massive spending increase has not made the world any safer. 🧵👇

1️⃣ Maryland's GOP sheriffs are rushing to join an ICE program that's one of the most visible funnels into the deportation machinery.

State Democrats were on the verge of banning the program in Maryland—but chose to stand down.

The State Police maintain a gang database that gets shared with ICE.

It contains over 5,100 names and uses hazy criteria like tattoos, clothing, and social associations to label people as gang members. It hasn't been audited by an outside entity.
