I was 20 when HS2 was announced. Great to know i’ll probably be in my late 60s when the Birmingham-Manchester section starts work let alone finishes. Seems like a country doing things the right way!

There is a widespread feeling of decline about place. On every dimension people are more likely to feel that their area has got worse over the past ten years. This is especially true for the condition of local high streets, levels of crime, access to good shops and access to good quality healthcare.

Anyone who has been into A & E in the last few years knows just how awful it is. We waited over 10 hours to see a doctor with what could have been a very serious condition. On entering A&E we were told there was an 8 hour wait to see a doctor.

Labour did very little in the way of serious thinking about health policy in opposition and barely any before deciding “electives” was the first of the various fires in the NHS to put out, and now the die is cast on that one.
As I've said before the lack of focus on A&E in govt plans is bewildering even just from a political perspective. For many people it's their most viseral and memorable interaction with the state.
