I was with Silvia on Corso Nizza, so empty and sun-drenched in those days. She looked at me and said, with an expression of shock and admiration: 'You seem like Tess!'
It was a grave thing to say. We had just read Tess of the d'Urbervilles: what she meant I don't know, but it helped me define my somewhat dreamy state, between blissful and dis-tressed. Almost as though I were truly going to be 'sacrificed', even if 'crowned with flowers'. I had never said it to myself, but I thought, or rather I felt, that getting married was something fatal, abyssal in fact, a kind of death. I intuited a sense of risk, which was exhilarating too, but detached from me, from our story. Almost an investiture: for some unknown end.
