We have a new project: Made in Your Community!

With support from @skypeascientist.bsky.social , we’re creating beautiful double-sided cards that feature local scientists and their work — all placed in local cafes, breweries, and community spaces.

The artist? @ehrenenglish.bsky.social

The animal? EELS.

Happy (or at least paused despair?) #MolluscMonday! This species shows some extreme sexual dimorphism. Not only is the gorgeous webbing (blanket) only found in females, but the males are teeny tiny.

Inspired by pcaiger's Robson's blanket octopus observation on inaturalist.

Oooo I'll keep this in mind next time I restock stickers and prints

I look more and more like this crab every day.

Absolutely stunning video of a Antarctic gonate squid captured during an expedition aboard the R/V Falkor (Too). It's never been seen alive before! Read more in the New York Times: www.nytimes.com/2025/06/11/s...

Happy summer solstice! Since we're celebrating the sun, it seems like a good time for an ocean sunfish! Like us, they like to bask in the sun after a cold dive to warm up ☀️ 🐟

Here is the feed for #FishyFriday !

Use the tag to get a flood of fish/ #aquatic themed creatures in the feed every Friday. No rules or prompts, just #art and #photography you’d like to share.

Thanks for joining in today and sharing your lovely #fish 🥰

I'm on PST so this still counts for #MolluscMonday, right? (right?!?) Meet the smooth giant clam (Tridacna derasa) 🐚✨ It's name is a bit misleading as it still has plenty of texture, just not quite as much as its cousin, the giant clam (T. gigas).

Happy Friday the 13th! It's not Halloween but it is spooky so here's a painted wooly bat 🦇 ❤️
Reminder to not buy taxidermied ones online - they aren't bred in captivity so all those specimens are wild-caught. Removing that many from the population isn't sustainable.

Reminder: sci-comm and outreach costs money, and it’s being defunded across all STEM fields. It’s not just something scientists “do” (or fail to do, or need to do more).

I mean, most of us do “do” it on our own time too, but that will never be enough.

I see a lot of people talking about how "we just need to explain science more to the public".

The state Space Grant programs (one issued in each state) does incredible deep and wide outreach work - supporting education at every age and stage, nurturing science interest.

Under the proposed White House budget, the NASA Space Grant program would be eliminated.

I was a NASA Space Grant recipient during my Masters—it funded my research on water on Mars.

I then went on to work in science & mission ops on multiple NASA Mars missions immediately after graduation. (1/2)

Don’t forget you can just go draw a bug whenever you want.
zillahsmith.bsky.social
When the world gets too weird you can just go outside and look at bugs.
Open sketchbook depicting ink drawings of two moths. A live moth sits on the bottom right corner. It is dark outside and the page is illuminated with a flashlight. In the background is a white sheet with blue light reflected off of it. Photo of hands holding three kinds of moth, two smallest ones on the left and a large one on the right. Close up of a small painting in a sketchbook of a small green and brown moth. A live moth perches next to its drawing on the book. Landscape photograph taken around midnight. The sky is dimly illuminated and cloudy. A white sheet hangs between two trees in the middle distance and a man wearing a red headlamp is bending over in front of it. It is a nature scene sparsely populated with trees which have not leafed out yet.

🚨 A new rule would let career scientists like NSF/NIH program officers be replaced by political appointees

Already 14,000+ public comments, deadline is Friday

📣 Comments can be short. Courts consider them—and scientists with NSF/NIH experience are especially impactful

Our chromosome-scale genome assembly of Nanomia septata, a siphonophore - doi.org/10.1101/2025... . Much larger than many other cnidarian genomes, fewer chromosomes, and highly rearranged. No smoking gun for how they achieve complex colony-level organization. Great work Namrata Ahuja and friends!

But until then, you have two assignments:

1. Keep being a scientist.

2. Be the biggest, most creative, most persistent pain in the ass Trump and his clown posse have ever experienced.
