A highlight of the festival hanging with Brandon Streussnig and finally getting to meet the amazing Isabel Sandoval.

Also, the scene where Graham and Merrill talk about miracles is astonishing. Just really beautiful writing. Tak shot the shit out of it too. My gf rewound the scene last night because she immediately wanted to watch it again.

Rewatched Signs last night. Still a masterpiece, close to his best, but this time I was so moved by how vulnerable it is, particularly Graham Hess. I think he’s M. Night best lead. Such an open hearted choice to lead with fear and uncertainty from moment to moment. Special film.

A movie I did not like at 21 or 22 when I first saw it, watched again in 2023 and loved it. One of my biggest personal turnarounds on a movie and proof to me, myself, that you should never totally write off anything that was made with real care and heart. you change, see what changes for you.

I'm also not a big Joaquin guy, I think he's largely been pretty terrible over the last ten years give or take. I know that's an ~unpopular opinion~ but it's how I feel. Anyhow, he's really incredible in this.

I’ve been slowly going back and watching Night from the beginning since seeing him last month and it’s been so rewarding. Can’t wait for the Village.

Ending here, with a father who can’t assure his children of their safety and is tipping into mental oblivion at any giving moment, man…it’s such a special film

The three movie run of breaking down traditional action heroes, first with Willis then Gibson, and casting them as these sensitive, struggling men is really incredible.
brndnstrssng.bsky.social
I think the moment of the movie this time, the thing that ties in how special Gibson’s performance is + Night’s characterization of Graham, is when he’s speaking to Isabelle the dog about how silly she’ll feel when this is all a hoax and it’s so clearly him reassuring himself

This makes me so happy. This movie means a lot to me and seeing it get a second life (hehe) on physical media really brings a smile to my face.

So excited to share that I have an essay in this upcoming release of Larry Fessenden's excellent take on Frankenstein, Depraved. Few filmmakers mean more to me than him and it was a true honor to be included in this.

So proud to be back in @fangoria.bsky.social, this time for a great chat with Alex Phillips on his killer new film, Anything That Moves.

Also so cool to be in the same issue as this instant all timer of a cover, paying homage to that classic Tom Savini cover

A somewhat surprising but very satisfying end to a great project over at the A.V. Club. Nothing but appreciation to @jacoboller.bsky.social for including me in the initial rounds (giving me my first byline at the storied institution) and allowing me to write alongside @brndnstrssng.bsky.social.

Here's the first round of what I've been working on for the past few months: A 32-combatant tournament bracket to determine the greatest action franchise ever made. There's also a reader poll if you want to correct our choices www.avclub.com/best-action-...
What's the greatest action franchise of all time?
Round One: Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to follow along in our 32-combatant tournament to find the best action franchise.

Finally watching Happy Gilmore 2 and, if nothing else, Sandler is excellent in it. He’s always been good, of course, in his own way but he’s really aged into a great actor.
