Avg person can't tell you a thing about formal definitions of "play" or "game". They can't tell you in a formal philosophy/ludology sense the lofty design principles and social-play appeal of trump-taking games. But they damn sure like Spades/Hearts/Whisk/Tarot & can tell you which variant is best.
I think a fair bit of RPG discourse mistakes "most players don't care about RPG theory" (true) with "most players don't care about the things that theory is about" (false).
It is fair to say that I have known very few players who actually care about stance theory in the abstract.

I don’t know if it only makes sense without the periphery stuff, but Nier has books, stage plays, etc. I once asked Taro about this and how are English fans supposed to keep up and he looked confused and asked “Why would you need to keep up? Who needs all of that?”
After "film trilogy that dropped a critical plot point exclusively via timed Fortnite event" and "video game series whose story only makes sense if you're aware of the events of a canon pachinko machine", I feel like there are whole frontiers of user-hostile narrative design waiting to be explored.
