Aside from this being incorrect - the underlying rule on sovereignty and statehood is the Montevideo Convention, which doesn’t imply defence capabilities - this is illuminating on what is now pseudo-official U.S. policy: any territory you cannot defend is fair game for someone else
Miller: Denmark is a tiny country with a tiny economy and a tiny military. They cannot defend Greenland… Under every understanding of law that has existed about territorial control for 500 years, to control a territory you have to be able to defend a territory…

Australia has an opportunity to get out of AUKUS. We should take it.

We ask the Albanese Government to prioritise Australia's interests and security, and to join the UK and the US Governments in undertaking an independent parliamentary inquiry into AUKUS.

AUKUS has tied Australia to a sinking nuclear defence enterprise called the United Kingdom. It’s not just a retired UK Admiral, the UK Audit office has tracked the structural failures for years. But don’t worry, Marles and Meade say it’s “on track” - they are dangerously deluded

Australia's racist party doubles its support since the May 2025 election

Centrist Labor government will absolutely see this as a sign that it needs to be more racist (and in doing so, actively feed more support for One Nation and lose support for themselves)

What is the threshold for sanctioning PM Netanyahu and his govt?!

Signatories to the genocide convention like 🇦🇺 must take action in the face of genocide, including taking measures to stop it.

The global community has to do more.

Israel has killed more journalists in the last 22 months than were killed in the US civil war, WW1, WW2, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan combined.

The numbers are simply unprecedented - these are their names

Concerning reports the unreleased National Climate Risk Assessment is “dire” and “diabolical”.

It maps what the people & places we love stand to lose from climate change.

We should know this before the govt sets our 2035 emissions target

Release it now.

Labor keeps ‘dire’ climate report under wraps
The government has delayed the release of a “shocking” assessment of global warming’s effect on the economy, just weeks before its 2035 target decision.

One of the reasons Twitter became the place for govt feeds was that it used to be possible to view all of (non-private) Twitter without being logged in, hence making it function like a mini blog. That ended under Musk, and really should have been the end of it.
It’s fucking wild to me that Twitter ever became a major go-to medium for government address to constituents

After a secret hearing I wasn’t allowed to attend, the ART has ordered evidence tendered by the Govt is to be kept secret, along with the name and employer of the person giving the evidence. It’s an extraordinary attack on open justice. The ART declined to give reasons. #auspol
They say 1) the document is SECRET; 2) their argument and evidence on why the document is secret is SECRET; 3) their witness’s name is SECRET and 4) their witness’s agency is SECRET.

5) Right now, in Canberra, there’s a SECRET hearing underway on 2 to 4. 🤷‍♂️ #SecrecyQuintuplet #FOI

The @albomp.bsky.social govt is being awfully quiet about Lattouf v ABC

Not even any expressions of "grave concern" about the craven capitulation, unlawful behaviour & derogation of public interest journalism by ABC senior management?

No interest in the integrity of the national broadcaster?
hey quick question: is anyone in the government's leadership going to say anything about the ABC? surely a high profile unfair dismissal linked to managing cowing to a lobby group, and involving board meddling, is worth saying something? maybe even an investigation? some consequences for the board?
