#HorrorWritersChat Ghosts belong in the liminal spaces next to comforting ones. The hallways of your house. Between the trees in the forest. Just behind you in the stark sunlight of a summer morning. This is my favorite spot for them, because you feel safe and secure. It's an illusion ripped away.

Now, let us begin! Let the flutes bleat and the trumps blare, snatching all the souls of the living away! What are your favourite haunts? Mausoleums? Lavish estates? What secrets do their wraiths protect within?
#HorrorWritersChat
Art by Jelle Husson, featuring a haunted monastery of many sharp-tipped towers scraping at the midnight sky. The largest is in the centre of the structure’s roof, whose walls are painted white. The monastery is located above a hilly terrain of dark stone and dark green moss. A stony, twisting road leads to the monastery.

Question Two

Ah, the performance has begun! Behold the souls of the living darting into the flutes and trumpets! Now, as you sip your ectoplasmic wine, tell us – what are your favourite locations for ghosts? And why?

I like my ghosts like my coffee: derived from the souls of inanimate objects. A house that haunts before the plaster is dried, a spooky doll that just left the factory, a combo TV/DVD freshly plugged in. From whence the spectres? Who knows, but they're in all the banal crevices

I like the idea of a haunting that just starts. It's what makes Poltergeist so effective. It's not a family moving into a dream home. It's a cluttered, lived-in suburban house that suddenly has ghosts.

I was a Boy Scout and they played it at like every district-wide event we had to go to.

Hello all. Tom Coombe here, horror writer who is starting to wish he'd lived in more places than Pennsylvania in his life.

My wraithful visage would probably be more disappointed.

Be welcomed to the ethereal music hall! A stringed aperitif is in order… do tell the Symposium what do you write, from where… and what IS, indeed, your wraithful visage for tonight?

Come in, come in! The Phantasmal Symposium has just begun! Settle in the ruined music hall, and tell us – what do you write, from where, and in what ghostly visage have you arrived at our askewed doorstep?

I love living in a city full of immigrants and tons and tons of people who are not at all like me and not like each other. It makes us all better and it makes our city better. I know I’m preaching to the choir by saying this on the lib app but I sometimes just get so overwhelmed by how special it is

Whenever Lee Greenwood comes up (not that it often does), I like to throw out this little anecdote: I know a guy who attended a wedding where, at the end of the night, all the guests had to stand in a circle and join hands while "God Bless the USA" played.

Interview with NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang: Huang said he’s “super excited” about the financing opportunity, adding that he wishes he could give Musk more money.

“Almost everything that Elon is part of, you really want to be part of as well,” Huang said.

Made some real-life friends. Pretty much everything I've gotten published -- and my own self-published collection -- couldn't have happened without social media in one way or the other.

I'm really glad I've kept up with this, one week in. At the very least, I'll have a bunch of first drafts to polish in November.

Congratulations to our lead auditor Gary Thorndale, whose son just got married to, as Gary says, "a dental hygienist who makes me wish I was single and 20 years younger."

I think what would be really helpful is if we all went around and said one thing we really appreciate about horror movie icons of the 70's and 80's. I'll start.

Leatherface: His love of Family

Michael Myers: His Hometown pride

Jason Voorhees: Man, that dude just goes for it

I'm part of Gen X and have never seen an episode of The Brady Bunch, which MTV spend most of the 90s assuring me was a seminal piece of culture for people my age.
hannahfearn.bsky.social
Inspired by a post I just saw in which someone admitted they hadn’t seen a single episode of Friends nor the film Love Actually… what cultural hole do you have that’s a bit weird for your generation?

I’ll go first: I haven’t seen Dirty Dancing.
