I can recommend watching the Granada Holmes adaptations with the text in front of you. Whole sections exactly the same. Interesting tweaks in other places which are often improvements.
Watching *and* reading ‘The Solitary Cyclist’ by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It strikes me that this has something of the feel of a ghost story – perhaps partly because the Granada adaptation has something of Lawrence Gordon Clark about it.

Last few years I've tried to squeeze in "bucket list" reads. Last year was Book of the New Sun. Previously Dune and Frankenstein

I still have E. R. Eddison's Zimiamvian books, Earthsea, Varney the Vampire (1845), le Morte D'Arthur or The Water Margin on the list

Anyone else have bucket list reads?

Before the midterms of 1866, President Andrew Johnson called his congressional opponents traitors and said they should be hanged.

Voters were so profoundly moved by his words... that they gave his opponents a supermajority in Congress, and the nation got the Fourteenth Amendment.

52) Popularity is not a measure of quality.

Poul Anderson's THE BROKEN SWORD came out the year before LOTR. One was a dark, adult, grim account of supernatural warfare. The other started with a birthday party for Hobbits. In a fair world, Anderson would be spoken of in the same breath as Tolkien.

I really hate it when scientists keep saying that “we need to rebuild trust in science,” because it implies that scientists are to blame for the mistrust rather than the millions of dollars of dark money that have funded political attacks on science in order to advance a far right agenda.

Four giants control 80% of meat processing.

A handful of companies control the pharmaceutical industry.
