My dad told me about Ada Lovelace and Grace Hopper to encourage me to do maths and sciences at school. Now, nearly 30 years into my IT career, I am so glad he did.

This is Ada Lovelace, daughter of Lord Byron and considered to be the first person to write a computer programme which was for Babbage's Analytical Machine. She died in 1842
In her honour, today is Ada Lovelace Day and is all about encouraging women and girls in mathematics, science and engineering.

Also they’re only the ones on the benefits. There are lots of us who are short of work but aren’t on the dole.

Yep, I swear by the BRAT diet to get my digestive system back under control: bananas, rice, apples and toast.

(Bracing myself for cancellation). Canned spaghetti on homemade pizza. With pineapple. I use the excuse that my kids like it but actually they don’t.

What foods do you love that you fully acknowledge make you a pervert for loving them?

See that small, moving splotch?

That's 3I/ATLAS, a comet that formed in a different star system, photographed from Mars orbit by the ESA Exomars Trace Gas Orbiter.

I just saw someone use the abbreviation “AI;DR” and I’ll be laughing for a while.

Generally raw? I’d chuck them in a stir fry briefly if I was doing one. But I’d usually just eat them with a bunch of other raw veg (carrots etc). (Frankly half the ones I grow don’t even make it up to the house from the garden).

Uh well this one just goes chomp chomp gone. Are there other ways??

In honor of National Poetry Day, the greatest parody rewrite of all time:
Screen cap of parodic version of William Blake's "The Tyger" that begins:
Tyger! Tyger! Burning bright
(Not sure if I spelled that right)
What immortal hand or eye
Could fashion such a stripy guy?
What the hammer that hath hewn it
Into such a chonky unit?
Did who made the lamb make thee,
Or an external franchisee?

Same. Today is baking, cleaning, then back to hibernation. I feel like a bear coming out of its winter cave, looking around, and saying to itself nah I’ll give it another week.

And now the singer is doing a beautiful rendition of Phil Collins’s another day in paradise about homelessness and the irony might actually kill me. Especially as I’m sitting on this lovely balcony with my gin and my sunset.
A beautiful resort with palm trees and lights over the pool, and a pergola thingy with a singer and musicians singing beautifully about homelessness and how we ignore poverty and my guilt is OFF THE CHARTS. Not pictured: how I could easily pay for another hotel night that I’m only going to use for like three hours.

That’s the kind of feedback I’d write down and come back to in the down moments. You must be a wonderful teacher.

Honestly they were asking him to pledge rate cuts, totally unrealistic, and that response is very him.

It’s hard to stay stressed with a gin and a view like this.
Sunset over the sea. Foreground is a coconut palm and assorted greenery. Background is sea and a distant island.

I managed to get one of the last few hotel rooms (in a new resort) after two hours of phone calls, visits to reception, web searches, and calls to our travel agent. If I’d been on my own I’d have just hung out at the hotel til 1am but I have the kids and the MIL with me.

On the upside, I get to use my travel insurance for the very first time. On the downside, a civilised 3pm flight has become a decidedly uncivilised 3am flight.

The other entertaining thing is that apparently I could be considered “European” when my ancestors LEFT IRELAND six generations ago and probably didn’t consider themselves European in the first place.

So when you play Pkoémon Go on a tropical island, the background changes …
A Porygon Pokemon is waiting to be caught. In the background behind it is a sunny tropical beach with palm trees.
