We don't know if the BA.3.2.2 saltation will mirror BA.2.86>JN1.

Yet, I'm struck by complacency & cognitive dissonance wrt vax & possible impact.
For flu, a handful of HA muts is bad clinically, despite OK ANNUAL vax ND50.

BA.3.2.2 is off the map, but apparently all is well...

What Steve said. There has never been a study in which high-quality, well-fitting masks were actually WORN that did not show a significant impact on disease transmission. Many mask studies failed to take account of post-allocation confounders (non-adherence + non-mask people choosing to mask).
So, to those who say "masks don't work", cite the flawed Cochrane report, insist upon an unfeasible RCT, accuse folks of panic, and undermine public health on social and mainstream media during a flu/RSV epidemic...

1. Seasonal viruses may be "normal", but they do immense harm.

BBC article the other day (? Leicester) about winter pressures. Maybe 3 masks out of 100 staff shown. If you don’t have flu (or covid) before you enter hospital you are likely to have it (staff or patient) when you leave (alive or dead)!
🤷 Besides vaccination, against flu or COVID-19, we should be careful not to mix with others when ill, and practise good personal hygiene - wearing effective face-coverings, in an appropriate manner, not hanging off our nose, mouth, or chin. @drtoniho.bsky.social @bmj.com

Agreed. Hospitals are seeing greater pressure than flu figures alone reveal as there are around 1500 people with covid occupying hospital beds to add to the current 2500 (rising) flu occupancy. COVID never mentioned. Test positivity doesn’t show everything.
Besides communicating the importance of vaccination, where available, the government should be explicit about not mixing with others when ill, using effective face-coverings in an appropriate manner, and making use of ventilation, to avoid spreading airborne viruses.

Should you wear a mask if you've got symptomatic flu? YES. If you wear it at home *from the onset of your symptoms*, your family members are much less likely to catch flu from you (but you must avoid unmasked co-sleeping and eating around same table - have your meals alone). 1/

Whereas in the UK vaccination is only for the over 75s (plus a very limited cohort of immune-suppressed, which doesn’t include Covid-related suppression!) and a historical vaccine (kp2) at that! They are still trying for “herd immunity” to a coronavirus here! 😭
Australia’s TGA has added the new Comirnaty LP.8.1 COVID-19 vaccine, targeting the LP.8.1 variant.

It’s recommended annually for adults 18–64 who aren’t severely immunocompromised and is free for all residents.

Pfizer says it’s now available.

My method projects "Expected Deaths" using a linear regression on the weekly deaths (4-week average) from a baseline of 2015-2019 deaths.

Some vaccines like COVID and flu don’t stop completely stop infection.

But they do reduce the risk of getting infected and greatly reduce severe illness risk.

They are still worth getting.

Since they are not 100% effective it’s also wise to add another layer of protection by wearing a mask.
