Dual citizen Canada/US. Grandma, love camping in uncrowded places. Heartbroken about the US election result. Some of the same trends in Canada, too.

Data centres are energy hungry but what if we could use their waste heat to heat our homes?

That's exactly what happens in places like Finland: Cities are tapping the vast amounts of waste heat generated by data centres, and feeding it into district-heating networks.

We face a climate emergency, a housing/affordabikity/homelessness emergency, a public health emergency, an equity emergency, an infrastructure cost emergency, all tied to too low densities, not enough housing, & far too much car dependency.

What we DON’T face is a “community character” emergency.
Despite a well-recognized housing emergency in Puget Sounds, cities continue to wield their emergency powers in ways that are related to...anything but that crisis.

A latest example: Bellevue is considering an emergency control tonight to protect the "character" of Old Bellevue from development.

On this day in 1955 Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat. For 381 days people boycotted the buses. They walked, carpooled and organized every single day until segregation cracked. Nothing will change today without that same resolve. Freedom isn’t granted, it's taken one step at a time. #Resist

Myth: drivers deserve more space on roads than cyclists & pedestrians because they pay registration and gas taxes

Facts: (1) registration and gas taxes don’t cover all the costs of road construction and maintenance; (2) most bikers/peds also have a car (90% of US households owns one)

A corral like this seems like a good solution to rental bikes left on footways.

And if folk complain about a change and the council, on reflection, consider their complaint to be unsubstantive e.g. "it takes up a parking space", there's really no need for them to act.

Heard this one? The City of Barcelona traded 3 lanes of vehicle traffic for an exceptional 4.7km green pedestrian corridor in the heart of the Eixample grid. Businesses sued, & eventually won in court. Then they admitted that they actually like the change.

Streets for people are good for business.

Posts about urban biking in Dutch cities are routinely replied to with comments like “well, they have the big advantage of being relatively flat.”

The Dutch also have the big advantage of not constantly making excuses about why they can’t make clearly smarter city-making decisions. #Leadership

Why is the government doing this?
What’s the justification? How will the unhoused, the elderly, the disabled keep identifications up to date? Isn’t this another barrier? Why change prescription drug plan outlined in Bill 11? Why don’t they have answers for those things up front? #ABPoli #ABLeg
