A brief explanatory thread about why at least some of my content is going to be All Wars of the Roses, All The Time for a bit.

(There will be other topics! I know me. But also I have an ambitious project I'm working towards.)
Me, in a comment to @lionesselise.bsky.social, apologising for not pinging about a thing earlier in the evening:

"(In my defense, I was reading The Sunne in Splendour earlier.)

I have *so many feelings* about all these historical people."

I mean, I already did. I just have more feelings now.

Today in the 1480s related reading: December's reading is fiction!

I started with a reread of Josephine Tey's The Daughter of Time (1951). Many people cite this as the one that got them interested in Richard III. (It was not my entry point, though!)

I'd completely forgotten how funny it is.

@kiyanicoll.bsky.social and I on thematic unities, as we do.

(Fixing a mistag...)
Thematic unity of dangerous birds! Thematic unity of snow leopards! Thematic unity of Cassandra references.

(Also, skimming through DMs: meeting Jim on the road, Garin fits, unicorns, Henut is creepy in a cemetery...)

But yes, delighted at this one too.

I've got the rest of the week off the day job, and my plans are a bunch of editing and prep for the 1480s project research.

Apparently brought to you by good coffee and chocolate chip muffins. My executive has functioned enough to put out the ingredients for the latter out to come to room temp.

I bought my cat a new self-heating cat bed, which arrived first thing this morning.

There are now small pleased cat noises coming from the corner of my bedroom, and I am delighted.

(She loves being within 6 inches of me, but she is getting older and should have cosy options for cat rotation.)

As @kiyanicoll.bsky.social said when linking this last night, absolutely relevant to the draft I just finished.

(Which involves selkies. And an Orkney sea cave, though not with the singing at the time.)

Today, in a change for my cover designer...

Instead of the cover brief getting into the details of the skirt and/or bustle for a particular year, this time it's "So, let me get specific about seals."

(Specifically grey seals, the fact selkies are traditionally larger than that, and the nose.)

Someone in my authorial Discord: [hoping for more about the solstice extra.]

Me, after contemplating, deciding I can share two things. I don't think they're actually usefully informative, though.

1) The solstice extra takes place in 1948.

2) Croissants are involved.

Should anyone be writing something set in Boston in 1835, I just stumbled on a glorious historical resource:

tile.loc.gov/storage-serv...

Full title in next post, because it's long. Businesses, doctors, organizations, all sorts of meaty details. (Came across it while researching for work.)

This was such a fun interview, and I loved having the chance to answer great questions. (Including the reality of librarian life...)
It's A Month of Rain & Reads, and it's a great day for an interview.

Today, we get to hear from Celia Lake (@celialake.bsky.social) about writing historical fantasy and about what it's really like to be a librarian.

Me to @kiya about the book I'm 3 chapters into writing:

Sometimes I write cosy novels about the Blitz. Sometimes I write cosy novels about the moral injury of trust and safety and equivalent work?

(Deeply informed by my own experiences and @rahaeli.bsky.social 's extensive commentary.)

Exciting news! I've been working all year on a vertigo arts project in collaboration with others in academia, physical therapy, puppetry, and dance. Now the first part is out: I'm running a creative writing workshop for people who are directly or indirectly affected by vertigo. >

I am eyeing my playlists and wondering just how many versions of "I am stretched on your grave" I have on here, anyway.

(Not that they're not seasonal.)
