If we don’t get out of this, the tragedy won’t be that evil people managed to end the America experiment. It will be that such unimaginably stupid evil people managed to end the American experiment.

They kidnapped the head of a Latin American country, replaced him with an insecure white racist who has spent his entire life arguing that Latinos are subhuman, and made clear that their primary aim is to plunder the country for its resources.

If it isn't yet clear, yes, we're the fucking baddies.
Per WASH POST, Stephen Miller will play an “elevated role” in Venezuela (what could go wrong!) and Machado won’t be president because she accepted the Nobel Peace Prize Trump wants (yes, seriously)

Couldn’t make it up if we tried

If this happened to a right-wing activist - every single Republican elected officials (along with the right wing media machine ie Bari would have her on 60 mins by this Sunday) would make her a hero.

Where are the Democrats?
What in the Gestapo is going on in Grand Rapids?

Watch this activist get arrested *mid-interview* for speaking out against U.S. action in Venezuela.

A malignant narcissist is never satisfied. Tearing apart rule of law in America is not enough. Now he’s bent on destroying the world order that has provided relative peace & stability since WWII. No one has ever made him stop. Not John Roberts, not the voters.

Vote in Donald Trump, surround him with sycophants, expect an insane circus. The lawlessness and chaos was so knowable, alas.

This shouldn’t surprise anyone. He also decided to raid Venezuela because Maduro was dancing on TV.

He doesn’t make decisions based on the reality on the ground - he makes decisions based on his ego. Always.
Insanity: Sources close to the White House told the Washington Post Trump lost interest in backing Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado to lead the country because she accepted her Nobel Peace Prize rather than demanding it be given to Trump, which was viewed as an “ultimate sin.”

This new war in Venezuela is deeply corrupt.

I will never vote to send someone’s son or daughter to war to make oil executives richer.

Calling public benefits “entitlements” is just the most contemptible right-wing trash.
No. No. No.

Punitive processes make narrowly targeted programs *less* efficient and *more* costly. Because more scrutiny requires more bureaucracy.

Punitive processes also make it *less* likely that people will get aid for which they qualify. Because of the roadblocks and stigma scrutiny creates.

The trouble is that Schumer thinks he is a fantastic communicator and nobody can make his party's case better than him, so he does all these interviews and it only makes Democrats look pathetically weak. If he was smarter he'd let the Dem senators who are better at it be the spokespeople.
We must focus on lowering costs for the American people, not starting new wars on a whim with no tangible strategy.

Once again, with feeling, the right hates the civil service because they hold the President accountable to the rule of law.
Another galling example of this: It's been said that Trump's hatred of the "deep state" is rooted in hatred of its "warmongering." But Trump hates the deep state because it tried to hold him accountable for his crimes and because a professional civil service is a barrier to authoritarian corruption!

THIS. Exactly this. Right now, Trump and cronies are blustering around, further shredding the remnants of Great Power status.

Future doesn’t exist but something like ‘Spain in the late 17C’ may be where the US ends up in a few years.
The USA has the capacity to do anything it wants, to anyone, anywhere. But it cannot control the consequences of choosing to do it.
In the final chapter, @seandnaylor.bsky.social writes that during the War on Terror, JSOC commanders "built the perfect hammer for the National Command Authority. The risk was that, as a result, successive administrations would continue to view too many national security problems as a nail."

one of my recent preoccupations is the visceral hostility the MAGA right has for the histories and traditions of the United States. these are people who spit on the Declaration and salute third-rate European despots!
It's striking that progressives like Tim Walz and Zohran Mamdani evoke the middle American attitude that, "Yes, we can fix these social problems because we're Americans and it's the right thing to do!" While the "America first" right only emulates failed and failing nation-states elsewhere.

A reminder of the stunning rate of scientific progress: it’s only been 101 years that we’ve known the Universe is larger than the Milky Way. Now we know that it’s at least *1 million* times larger in linear size than the Milky Way (and probably 50 or more times larger than that, even).
Edwin Hubble announced OTD in 1925 that Andromeda and other spiral nebulae were in fact separate galaxies outside the Milky Way, in a paper read to an AAS meeting by H.N. Russell. The Universe was far larger than what many astronomers had imagined; more than just our little island of stars. 🧪 🔭
