This is my favorite slide to open up my U.S. Congress courses with to quantitatively prove to my students how much I unironically care about Congress. It's my daily average heart rate from my Apple Watch over a 5-yr period. The #1 highest day in that period is circled in red.

It was a rare moment of joy in this interminable year to get to revisit Marco Rubio's Tiny Watergate with @jaclynkettler.bsky.social.

The culinary journey continues with some more food fails in very public political spaces.

A president gets sick in the lap of another head of state; Marco Rubio learns about the fine art of drinking from a water bottle; and U.S. Senators school us on the finer points of hot dogs and tuna melts.

I know there's a lot going on right now and this is a small thing, but can we please scrub "trade barbs" as an idiom from all future political news coverage?

Or alternatively, we start applying it to all high-profile white-knuckle conflicts, e.g. "Kendrick and Drake traded barbs"

There’s an essay to be written about how maga patriotism is just shitty fandom. Anyone who follows sports knows fans like this, it’s always the ref’s fault, the other team doesn’t exist, there’s some plot/player/coach holding the team back otherwise they’d always win easy bsky.app/profile/atru...

Ted Cruz just posted a video montage with photos of every Democratic senator altered to make them wear sombreros and mustaches. It’s set to the song Macarena.

What the fuck are we doing here?

The 44 Senate Democrats who voted for Schumer's Shutdown should know that the Sombrero posting will continue until they re-open our government.

There are no real winners in a #governmentshutdown, says congressional expert Charlie Hunt.

But the longer it drags on, the more funding programs — often backed by Democrats — stand to lose.

This short passage from a Politico afternoon newsletter captures a huge amount of the advantage gained by lying at scale and the why the DC press corps remains wired for the GOP.

Between 2014 and 2019 I took probably a thousand plus rides on the metro and never once felt truly unsafe. I really think these folks believe that "a guy sitting next to you hasn't showered in a few days" counts as assault and battery

House Republicans are refusing to seat Dem Adelita Grijalva, who won a special election more than a week ago. She's the last signature needed to force a vote on the Epstein files.

The soonest the GOP will act is Oct. 7. In three prior specials this year, the winners were all sworn in a day later.

(Battle Hymn of the Republic continues playing)
And there’s the issue of masks. This Court has listened
carefully to the reasons given by Öztürk’s captors for maskingup and has heard the same reasons advanced by the defendant Todd
Lyons, Acting Director of ICE. It rejects this testimony as
disingenuous, squalid and dishonorable. ICE goes masked for a
single reason -- to terrorize Americans into quiescence. Small
wonder ICE often seems to need our respected military to guard
them as they go about implementing our immigration laws. It
should be noted that our troops do not ordinarily wear masks.
Can you imagine a masked marine? It is a matter of honor -- and
honor still matters. To us, masks are associated with cowardly
desperados and the despised Ku Klux Klan. In all our history we
have never tolerated an armed masked secret police. Carrying on
in this fashion, ICE brings indelible obloquy to this
administration and everyone who works in it. “We can not escape
history,” Lincoln righty said. “[It] will light us down in
honor or dishonor, to the latest generation.” Abraham Lincoln,
Second Annual Message to Congress (Dec. 1, 1862).

Poll after poll shows corruption is THE issue voters care about. And Jeffries goes out of his way to praise Adams, whose public corruption charges were dropped after Trump’s DOJ unceremoniously shut the case down?

Democrats have the winning hand right in front of them. Wild that they won’t play it.
statement titled “Leader Jeffries Statement on Mayor Eric L. Adams.” It says Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries thanked Adams for decades of service as an NYPD officer, state senator, Brooklyn Borough President, and New York City’s 110th mayor. The statement highlights achievements under Adams, including reduced violent crime, more affordable housing, and recovery from COVID-19. Jeffries acknowledges ongoing challenges like the high cost of living but says meaningful progress was made. He thanks Adams for his service and says that in the coming days his focus will shift to Republican healthcare and government funding issues, and that he will comment on the remaining mayoral candidates before early voting begins.
