if there's one thing I've learned today is that I spend too much time crafting emails in complete sentences -- fully-developed ideas, paragraphs replete with salutations and politeness formulae even -- if I want to become rich or powerful

Husband: are you going to spend a lot of time tonight in your office?
Me: no, I just have to solve a puzzle (when to schedule my proposal defense)

pretty funny in retrospect that QAnon hinged on the idea that powerful elites at the highest levels of government were smart enough to talk in code when sending emails to each other about their despicable crimes

Husband has agreed to go to dinner at my in-laws and now we play the "what does Chelsea eat game" and not in a "we love you" way but in a "you're weird and we refuse to understand" way.

so, I start with: they can make what they want
Husband: they want to know specifics

I've met with 127 students in 4 weeks and here are some of my themes:
- students who meet with me early seem to be the most "prepared"
- students who no-show sometimes never show
- some students who should absolutely meet with me in person, choose to meet with me differently and it's detrimental

If you're an academic chair in a higher education department - please be aware that Nebraska is fucking their HE department and shutting it down without a plan to assist their students.

If you can reach out to the faculty there and help their students out...

Incidentally, this is why I’m against strict spelling. Words should be spelled the way they sound & we spell words as if we’re speaking Middle English for ridiculous class reasons

In ME you’d pronounce the k in “knight” but some dumbass needed to prove he was cool & now we have a literacy problem
ever since I learned about three-cueing I've developed infinitely more patience for replies on social media. mfers literally do not know how to read. people are walking around conjuring random meanings into words they don't know, and they don't know a lot of words. it's crazy

Tapping the XKCD sign again to explain that no, I won't be seeing an aurora tonight. Or at least I really hope not. That would be bad. :)

One thing we've needed to do is build systems for communication. Upside down bottles means they're empty - they either need to be replaced or thrown in recycling - and they're out to make sure the other partner knows.

Sharing in case it's helpful for you to build a similar system!

Damnit, we have too much cloud cover for the aurora tonight

None of the universities I applied (or were considering) to were GRE optional. I purchased 1 math prep book, set time aside weekly, had to take time off of work to take the test, and decided I was taking it exactly once regardless of the score.
GRE prep costs hundreds of $ and time in studying, taking the GRE costs $, sending the GRE to schools costs $. It's a significant burden to applicants and might actually, according to these data, constrain who tries to get a PhD.

note that when someone talks about food aversion, or a caregiver of someone with food aversion talks about it, your common sense advice (make your own! Fake it with packaging! Buy this other brand!) isn't going to be helpful. It's not our first day. We've thought of it.

Practice your scripts ahead of time:
💠 "Oh wow, that's an inside thought, Uncle Jerry"
💠 "Mom, it's 2025 we don't comment on people's bodies anymore"
💠 "My doctor and I are happy with my weight."

You don't owe anyone an explanation.
