Found this defiant clump of snowdrops in our garden today!🌱 Despite the brutal cold of winter they have pushed their way through the damp earth to stand proud and show us there is hope - spring is on the way! 🙌 Hurray! ☺️

Today on the blog I wrote about how we keep telling the same, boring, wrong history over and over again, instead of doing more complex and interesting work, and why. Like, why are we talking about Magna Carta *ever* let alone in the Temple Church?

On what we choose to remember
The other day I had the pleasure of ducking into the Temple Church here in London. I’ve been by a number of times, but never actually in, and so I was looking forward to being a little history nerd…

[Scholarship is] where we’re nearest to our humanness. Useless knowledge for its own sake. Useful knowledge is good, too, but it’s for the faint-hearted, an elaboration of the real thing, which is only to shine some light, it doesn’t matter where on what, it’s the light itself, against the darkness

Got a lovely surprise from my new book when I opened it to find 2 Canterbury Gothic stained glass postcards! They show pilgrims on their way to visit Becket's shrine, from a window in the Trinity Chapel. Going to put them up in my workspace ❤️

Need to get of unwanted guests? Have you tried eels?

In 1538, Lady Motrell passed through London & asked to crash at the mayor's house. Not wanting to deal w/ her, he noped out & instead sent her some torches, wine, & 10 large, fresh eels.

Parting is such sweet...er...eels.

If we accept that 'amateurish' comes from 'amatus', past participle of the Latin 'amare' (to love), then we would accept this. The memorial wall is an act of profound love. ❤️

Was so disappointed and angry to receive this email yesterday. 'Voluntary Severance Scheme'. I wonder just how 'voluntary' it is in reality. The email just gets worse as it goes on. Dreadful. Appalled by UKC once again. The staff deserve better. The students deserve better.
