Was at a dance show in Athens, drunk off my mind, during college back in the early 2000s. Kept bumping into the guy behind me and finally wheeled around to see what his deal was and maybe even tell him off and it was Michael Stipe. Told him what a fan I was and got a very quiet, polite “Thank you.”
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

The French title for Gremlins translates directly as “Help! My idiot father spent the last of our money on a strange creature that will spawn an army of monsters if I break one of the incredibly specific and arbitrary rules that govern its existence.”

Stuck in line at the liquor store behind a very disgruntled woman in an elf costume. It finally feels like Christmas.

Up early on Christmas Eve trying to stuff peanut butter cups into a pair of open advent calendars because I’m too tired to maintain a teachable moment about patience and not getting ahead of oneself.

If someone as demonstrably unqualified as Bari Weiss can’t even do badly at a job they don’t deserve without criticism then what hope do any of us have…?

The thing that I am perhaps proudest of as a parent is that our family lore includes “Frankenstein answering geography questions.”

“I wait all week for The fucking Equalizer…!” Pitch-perfect comedic acting. What a legend. Absolutely gutted.

The people I know who are not dedicated “movie people” go maybe 1-2 times a year at most. I think that’s lamentable for reasons beyond nostalgia for the experience as I once knew it, but it’s also a fight that indeed feels over. I don’t think anything brings them back with any increased regularity.
I am not sure how to get people back into theaters or if it's possible, but I do know that if the strongest remaining argument is "you SHOULD," or something about the holiness of the collective big-screen experience, the battle is lost. That has no traction with people who don't already believe it.

We are reminded time and again that nobody beyond the beltway crowd or the terminally online knows or care anything about any of these people. It would all be so much easier if we just stopped paying attention to any of them.

1992: The Penguin running for mayor?! What a ludicrous plot point. How could we ever buy that anyone would be dumb enough to vote for someone so grotesque?

2025: Maybe the Penguin can run in 2028 and return us to a semblance of normalcy.
