Today, at a time of unprecedented income & wealth inequality, his words ring truer than ever.

Authoritarianism can only succeed when democracy fails to deliver for working people.

Authoritarian parties can only succeed when the pro-democracy parties fail to fight for working people.

We need a new democracy and a new party system which can represent working people.

How Trumpism is like Stalinism. A thread. 🧵🧵🧵
Many people make valid comparisons of Trumpism to Nazism. But I think MAGA authoritarianism bears more similarities to Joseph Stalin's Soviet Union – ruthless, paranoid, dishonest and determined to climb into every aspect of the lives of his people.

The semiotician Roland Barthes called this "mythologizing," when historically/socially contingent beliefs get presented as/assumed to be "natural" and "universal" truths as a way to buffer them from critique. It's rhetorically depoliticizing the deeply political, and it's everywhere.
"Yup, there's your problem. You've mistaken arbitrary norms specific to your social group for sacred immutable truths and it has driven you insane."

I don’t care what city or town you live in. If these guys jumped out of an unmarked van and grabbed you on the street, would you just assume they’re ICE or FBI? Would you willingly comply with their orders and get inside the van?

THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS.

THIS IS NOT AMERICA.
