the video must have jumped to TikTok, aka teen crack.

by the time i read the news this morning, about 7:50am, both kids were already well aware of the assassination of Kirk. the elder one advised immediately i probably wouldn't want to watch the video 😲. their lives are so saturated with US culture and politics.

This deleted (but archived) Truth Social post of Trump's from Thursday night is like something out of Twin Peaks:

I would read an academic murder book in which the murder was solved by reading the syllabus

I love this idea and also want a list of academic murder books. Please reply with recs

Hear me out: a dark academia murder book that opens at a department beginning-of-the-year celebration on a boat (I know a department that does this) and a professor goes overboard. The intrepid department chair must figure out who did it. Everyone is a suspect, including the chair herself.

If we survive this, I hope I live long enough to find out what historians dub this period in US history.

The Great Madness has a certain ring to it.

I vaguely remember tweeting something like the country that effectively captures this free energy source at scale will rule the 21st century. whelp.

Look, if we are doing authoritarianism then doing Kremlinology comes with it for free. I don’t make the rules.

Wait I thought people were joking about Trump being dead? People think it’s true bc he hasn’t been on tv in 3 days? What?

I’m not kidding when I say I love a formal synthesis. This one is spot-on. Some of what’s happening is people are trying to have a historical gaze for events that are still happening. Is it definitionally authoritarian? Cannot know until bodies stop dropping. But you can know it feels authoritarian

Thesis: Trump is ticking off his authoritarian to do list quickly
Antithesis: While Trump is *trying* to tick off his authoritarian to do list, he's not fully succeeding

Synthesis: Each item on this check list is not a binary but a spectrum, and we're *way* too far down the spectrum for any comfort

I find this @donmoyn.bsky.social piece helpful in clarifying why I disagree with the "America is already in competitive authoritarianism" thesis.

Don's checklist shows things that Trump has tried to do, but he hasn't *succeeded* in most areas

So much of my own job interpreting Trumpism for the public is just reciting elementary second wave insights about masculine domination very slowly and loudly for people who have never been exposed to them before.

Just thinking about the round-the-clock outrage that Fox News and other MAGA media have devoted to Mamdani's proposal to open a handful of city-run grocery stores.

Meanwhile, the president literally just nationalized Intel.
