Bonus Puzzle #10 - DESIGNER'S NOTEBOOK

... which is actually not a puzzle, but a set of 12 new puzzles, most of which require you to design a production line able to build one of two different products using conditional inputs and commands. It's challenging!

Bonus puzzle #8 - SLOT CAR TRACK

"Even though it was clear by the late 80s that video game racing would gain popularity over the old hobby of slot cars, someone at Matsuzawa had enough of a soft spot for it to approve the release of this track."

Bonus puzzle #7 - DOLLHOUSE KITCHEN

"This kids' kitchen playset originally included real heating elements along with realistic flame and smoke effects, but those features were nixed before it went into production due to safety concerns."

Bonus puzzle #6 - BOOMBOX

"Bring the beats with Matsuzawa's biggest boom box to date! The whopping twelve D batteries it requires will definitely set you back some cash, but the volume that enables will guarantee you never lose another boom box battle!"

This puzzle was inspired by a real 1980s chess computer that I found at a thrift store while we were working on Kaizen. Even on the absolute easiest difficulty, none of us were able to beat it...

UNTIL TODAY! What a coincidence! Good work, Jay!

Bonus puzzle #5 - CHESS COMPUTER

"The Matsuzawa ENDGAME was an entry-level chess computer intended to introduce children and neophytes to the world of chess. But sales faced headwinds because nobody could beat it, even when set to the lowest difficulty."

Bonus puzzle #2 - SYNTHESIZER!

"The battery-powered Matsuzawa Grendel let keyboard players jam with the music anywhere, anytime. It was praised for its eight realistic built-in voices and four-note polyphony, but some criticized the small number of keys."

When I was working on ChipWizard™ Professional in Last Call BBS, I made that the metric because that's what made sense for integrated circuits. As I tested those puzzles, I realized I really liked it; even if a puzzle requires a minimum set of tools, you can still noodle on how to pack them in.

I had the privilege of leading the localization team on this project!

David's story resonated so deeply with my own and I'm glad I got to be a part of bringing it to other languages, especially Japanese. Our team worked particularly hard to make sure the dialogue was period-accurate. Go play it!

🎮🕹️ There's a new (almost) #Zachtronics game out! It's "Kaizen: A Factory Story", the latest from @coincidence.games.

It's the puzzle gameplay you know and love tied up in a great 1980s Japan setting. I had a blast with it!

Check out my full review:
