Every pundit who took at face value the idea that the Right sincerely cares about free speech, or ideological diversity, or in fact has any principles at all, should be wearing a dunce cap and writing a lengthy mea culpa right now. Not for our catharsis but for public awareness at least

Not enough attention paid to the very direct right wing pipeline Substack promotes. Enough that Platformer and Casey Newton elected to switch to another service rather than support a platform that pushes and promotes hard right, conspiracy, and neo Nazi content www.platformer.news/why-platform...
Why Platformer is leaving Substack

and if you don't support those doing this work don't fall yourself and ally

and don't talk about people spewing anger online when that is the outlet in our community for voice - when all other avenues are co-opted , ignored or filled with misinformation.

It's also on the emotions wheel. Make space
So if you’re suggesting that it’s an insult, quite the opposite. If you’ve covering powerful people and none of them threaten you? Odd!

The amount of open anti-Indian racism on US software engineering forums (esp related to hiring) has really cranked up with the latest collapse of tech hiring + AI-driven labor displacement (and I guess the broader cultural turn). And people wonder why there is a reactionary culture foothold there.

I called a trustee, correctly, a transphobe because I believe language matters.

I watched allies shudder at the concept of calling things out directly.

I was threatened with a lawsuit. I worked for the government. People can take risks, they choose not to.

Privilege.
Btw this is one of the biggest reasons why it’s not as easy as people think to start up independent newsrooms or just be an indie journalist on substack. If you are actually holding powerful and rich people to account, you WILL need legal representation. Not a matter of whether but when
I say that as someone who has started newsrooms from scratch sometimes with two people - if you’re doing your job correctly you will need a lawyer because the first thing rich people do when you write something they don’t like is threaten you legally. It’s cheap for them and expensive for you

the fear generated by local far right actors in Waterloo Region through actual lawsuits and the threat of them has turned our community into a dangerous space for advocacy

lots of folks stood by and let it happen while lecturing people who held receipts for years, imo because of this fear.

Gemini, the AI built by Google, the company with everyone's data, the company that doesn't chase IPO and invests in tech first - will likely win out

Because it's a Google search at the end of the day.

Everything is computer,

searching for something
I'm starting to think a lot of people think AI is whenever the computer does something.

one lesser awful thing about the Epstein files is that genuine crimes against a huge number of children are being morphed into fuel for the influencer industrial complex who don't care about truth or accuracy and just want grist for the content mills

the least shocking thing in the epstein files that wont get enough attention. police regularly arrest and charge victims to coerce them into participating, often jailing them in conditions that are worse.

People are rightly disgusted by this speech, but it’s a measure of fascism’s normalization that many see this as more of the awful same rather than what I think most of us who’ve been reporting this beat hear it as: a significant calculated escalation. Full alert stuff.

Americans having to bootleg broadcast news about our government’s offshored concentration camp is a level of fascism that immediately precedes democratic societies dropping leaflets on us from weather balloons.
And now someone has uploaded a version that wasn't filmed off a TV.

There's also the torrent link there, which is probably the fastest way to download the 60 Minutes segment on CECOT if you want to save the file locally to your computer.
