In a recent lecture in Vienna, @timothysnyder.bsky.social, IWM Lesya Ukrainka Fellow, showed how authoritarianism erases a nation's distinctiveness, as seen in Belarus under Russian sway. Yet still, Belarus' vivid past suggests other possible futures.

Again, the main lesson of the 🇬🇷 eurozone crisis, a decade on, is that broaching the idea of “exit” from a “permanent & irrevocable” monetary union, based on completely invented “rules” that 🇬🇷 had supposedly “broken,” was wildly irresponsible on the part of 🇪🇺 & 🇩🇪 leaders:

Most books I have read over the years are German novels and biographies from the 1920s and 1930s. To at least come closer, even if you can never really understand it. Here is my top 5. 🧵

Great question. “From the ground up” doesn’t mean bypassing politics, it means rebuilding the conditions that make democratic politics work in the first place.
A quick thread on how I see the road ahead 🧵
Nice recommendations – what’s the best road there politically do you think? Or does “from the ground up” mean social activism bypassing conventional politics?

🧵 I've been exploring more ideas around disordered discourse, one of them is how communities use doubt as a weapon to deny anything that threatens their group-think. It’s not about serious inquiry. This isn’t healthy scepticism. It’s about reaffirming identity and loyalty.

How has it been used by would-be autocrats around the world? How is it playing out in the U.S. today?

Good read. My forthcoming essay, "The Citizen-Soldier," in the Oxford Handbook of American Military History (2026) addresses the problematic conflation of warriors with soldiers. They are not one in the same.
American bushido, the obsession with lethality, warrior ethos, and tactical “merit” was the logical endpoint of an all volunteer professional military. But it’s bleeding into the rest of American society in increasingly unhealthy ways. My latest⬇️
