Epithelial crowding drives membrane depolarisation by ENaC/Na+ entry which triggers rapid volume loss, piezo activation and live cell extrusion. Importantly, low intracellular ATP primes cells for live extrusion by preventing the restoring of mb polarisation.

Owen Sansom is a DMM Monitoring Editor and co-organiser of the 2024 DMM Journal Meeting. Owen is the Director of CRUK Scotland Institute, UK, where his research has been key in determining the molecular hallmarks of colorectal cancer and defining the roles of APC, WNT signalling and intestinal stem cells in tumourigenesis.
