Ok I also get people's responses here, but there has been push against Mars Sample Return from inside the space science community for a while. It is a mission that has long had lots of problems.
Scientists get giddy thinking about what they could do with Perseverance's rocks on Earth. But a new Congressional funding package effectively cancels the missions that would bring them here
NASA Found Something on Mars. Now We Might Just Leave It There
NASA spent years and billions of dollars collecting Martian samples to bring home. Now they might be stranded

I wouldn't hold your breath that the honorable US military (/s) will be coming to anyone's rescue
Just a reminder that ALL members of the military and the Secret Service PLEDGE LOYALTY TO THE CONSTITUTION, not a person, to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic".

How many take that oath seriously? Maybe they should.

I get people's knee jerk response of "just don't go to the US" but like, a lot of people have to travel for work, so "just don't" is not helpful advice while the article or alternative resources can be.
Traveling? Be aware that US Customs might demand to see what’s on your phone upon entry. Here’s some advice on how to handle the problem. GIFT ARTICLE

Why look at beautiful pictures of actual space when you could generate a generic YouTube gaming channel intro from like 10 years ago
LG is advertising their new OLED TV with Evo AI. To show off it's vibrant colors they generate video "inspired" by the James Webb telescope.

It probably just means position but I like the idea of this somehow having some magic sensor able to determine the emotional attitude of anyone around it
Behold Bibo, the first "AI powered art toy life form". It can perform "agile" social operations like occasionally responding when you use it's name or say hello.

Per the sales rep, if learns "like a child" but "can't do anything" aside from move it's head slightly

The imperial boomerang is here, and we can expect more ICE agents to kill unarmed people and before long anyone critical of the regime will be labeled a terrorist that threatens national security of the fatherland -- and can be summarily executed by masked paramilitary gunmen loyal to Trump.
To be clear that ICE statement shows this admin believes it can kill anyone it decides to label “domestic terrorist”

The masked secret police carrying out the regime's goals do *not* need more training.

Come on.

really tired of seeing claims that our illegal kidnapping of the Venezuelan president is to "distract" us from the Epstein files. Trump and the men around him have wanted this for a long time. this is a bad thing in its own right, not some attempt to hide from accountability

Marco Rubio is reportedly saying Maduro will stand trial in US courts.

Which means it’s now the US administration’s position that US courts can hold foreign presidents, but not the US president, accountable for crimes.

GODDAMN IT.

We are burning our history, at this point. This complete dismantling of so many crucial pieces of NASA (this library is at Goddard Space Flight Center, which is being taken apart piece by piece)
January 2, 2026 at 6:30 AM
Ah yes, space science is flourishing! Ignore the disappearing funding and shuttering of more and more parts of NASA. Archives are for nerds. More vanity project exploration for billionaires is definitely the best path to scientific progress.

Nobody names a classification scale after themselves. The scientific equivalent of slapping your name on the Kennedy Center.

How about a scale for hijacking a truly interesting scientific story for misleading, self aggrandizing ends?

Call it ”Likelihood Of Ego Boost”. The real “LOEB Scale”

One of the most incredible shots I've ever gotten, in Yellowstone. This coyote walked over a ridge in the blowing snow and posed for me, with a small grin on its face, the snowfalkes like stars in the background.

The desolation and beauty of life and nature is grounding, and so good for the soul.
