This obsessive need to give everything a backstory is starting to feel like nothing more than cowardice. Too scared to greenlight new ideas so let's just flog the ones that once worked to death
I do not want Gaston backstory, I do not need Gaston backstory, I reject Gaston backstory

Just so I'm clear on this, computer memory has tripled in price because a bunch of it that hasn't been produced yet has been ordered to populate GPUs that aren't installed in data centers that aren't built yet in order to service a demand that doesn't exist to make profits that don't happen.

I'm probably stuck with what my game machine is for like...five more years. So it better not fucking break and also like...man I don't know. I guess I'm just not going to buy new games for the most part and I'll maybe start shuffling stuff on and off drives again.
I built a new computer at the beginning of the year to get ahead of tariffs and apparently this was a brilliant decision not so much because of the tariffs but because I got ahead of the massive RAM price spike

one of the funnier aspects to the AI backlash is the fact that they're negatively polarizing much of the tech enthusiast demographic against them by making hobbyist PC building functionally unaffordable

Exactly. AI-generated media is targeted at people who are uninterested in—or incapable of—appreciating art as art instead of fungible Content™ to be consumed.

I have a theory that a straight line connects this moment, fandom culture with the same mindset, and years of hostility to media criticism.
The cool thing about art is the intentionality. Everything an artist does, an author writes, or a musician plays is on purpose.

GenAI has no purpose. It's random. There's nothing intentional about anything. Maybe you'll sometimes get something you want out of a prompt, but usually you won't.

NEW: The Trump-Vance White House has falsely accused an ally of Pope Leo — Sr. Norma Pimentel — of illegal activity tied to migrant aid, and cut off all federal funding to Catholic Charities in Texas.

Church leaders say it’s a targeted, political reprisal against Pope Leo and the Catholic Church.
Trump-Vance White House Targets Beloved Nun in Texas, Retaliates Against Catholic Charities
Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley — praised by Pope Leo as an “agent of hope” — now faces a six-year federal funding ban. Church leaders say it’s a vendetta by the Trump-Vance White House.

Saw Brotherhood of the Wolf with my dad in a theater during the Super Bowl one year. Was great, practically a private showing.

I think I saw Sweeney Todd in theaters with my mother the day after Christmas, but I only remember because it was just so off-theme. But fun.
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

This leads to my only reactionary impulse which is if I would have been born 200 years earlier I’d have been one of those guys who joined the navy and invented some kind of thermometer. There was room for the kind of guy who just got a stipend to write about the weather he saw on a ship.

A decent and quick exploration on how the GOP is utterly disconnected from reality when it comes to heir healthcare policy (which functionally is be rich or fuck off and die already — classic prosperity gospel bullshit).
“Unlike pretty much every other conservative party in the industrialized world,” American Republicans seem resigned to bleed out on health care, @jonathanbchait.bsky.social argues. Why can’t the GOP make peace with Obamacare?
Obamacare Changed the Politics of Health Care
It’s one thing for Republicans to deny hypothetical care. It’s another to take this tangible benefit away.

This coat is just ... Mm. Delicious. That 30oz wool doesn't hurt one bit (and given the -20C temps coming back to Chicagoland this weekend, would be welcome).

$6k for a bespoke overcoat isn't bad, though definitely not trivial.
Let's move up in price. This Whitcomb & Shaftsbury overcoat is £4,700 (or $6,185). For that, you get a fully bespoke, handmade overcoat made from 30oz fabric (beefy!)

This coat takes 70 - 80 hours to make. W&S takes more time on perfecting the pattern than H&M spends on making their entire coat.
