Market design has problems, for sure, but moving electrons to L3 points en mass also has huge actual costs. If markets distort the actual costs of things too much, we get run aways on arbitrage that are counter productive, and work against your goals.

See: ethanol subsidies
dague.net
They wouldn't, they would just hoover up electricity, drive to the nearest parking lot, burn the battery on non road miles, and repeat.

Nothing requires L3 electricity to go into road miles. With V2L & V2H electricity is fungible (which is good).
dague.net
I think highly subsidized L3 creates dangerous arbitrage escape that makes the whole system even more expensive.

eTransit vans full of Bitcoin mining hardware kind of arbitrage escape.

The unfortunate part of this NY Times visualization is that because NY Times staff doesn't understand electricity markets at all, they based this on state averages, and gives pretty wrong results for most people.

Utilities don't work that way. This should really be zip code based.

we charge our hyundai ioniq 5 around once every two to three weeks at a muncipal charger and i’d say it runs about $9 for 250 miles of range.

So, 100% agree. I don't think L3 is the lever. I think it's a lot of L2 infrastructure and utility programs that mean that DER controlled charging will give you $0.10 kWh energy rates.
dague.net
I've got a follow up conversation with a friend to show them, yes they could have done their 6 week road trip this summer in an EV.
dague.net
Is it? I don't know that's true. And the implications on power delivery requirements are huge.

The impediment I've seen in engaging is that EV chargers aren't on the side of the strode with big flashing signs like gas stations, so people think L3 chargers don't exist. Cost wasn't the key concern.
dague.net
I still don't think that makes sense.

Because that would mean you are making pulling 200kW at a random time cheaper than pulling 10kW in the afternoon.

You don't want 20 cars to decide it's cheaper to L3 and go and pull 4 MW instead of 200 kW in the middle of the afternoon.
dague.net
It also would have been nice if they actually let you choose your Utility. State averages are actually terrible proxy for electricity prices. I can't get the tool to give me my actual utility charging price (which is currently $0.17 kWh off peak).
dague.net
EVs that charge on L2 can be part of demand response and make the grid cheaper. EVs on L3 can not, and cause unpredictable congestion. Making L3 as cheap as L2 makes the grid more expensive.

Much better to push on ways to bring L2 to more kinds of parking.

“We’ll schedule it as soon as she wants”?

She’s been demanding it for weeks but Republicans keep blocking her.

They really really really don’t want the files to come out

RAJU: You swore in 2 GOP members during pro forma session. Why not swear in Grijalva? Does it have to do w/her signature on Epstein petition?

JOHNSON: It has nothing to do with that. We'll swear her in when everybody is back

R: Why not now?

J: Uh - we'll schedule it, I guess, as soon as she wants

I know Fall and Winter heatwaves are less deadly than those that happen in the Summer, but there's something about it being 80 degrees out while getting dark at 6pm that feels awful and eerie.

Ruben Gallego on whether Trump is talking to Democrats:

“Look, the President clearly has some kind of dementia, so I think there's a he's probably talking to himself, or think he's talking to a Democrat, but I sincerely doubt that that's actually he's actually physically talking to a Democrat.“

The solution to protect Americans from the harms of protectionism is to get rid of protectionist policies that drive up prices, reduces economic growth, and results in job losses!

Yet another handout is not the answer. We just want a government that’s not stupid or evil.

I'm genuinely starting to think that the people who say they want to see American's really fight back are really saying they want a specific kind of visible, stereotypical depiction of protest, and have zero zero tolerance for the kind of groundwork it takes to make change happen.

Nice to see this statement. I've heard that the cancellation of all these clean energy projects has caused absolute chaos among the unions, which have been preparing for specific projects, assigning experienced workers to them, and opening new jobs to backfill these moves— all now completely shot.

Republicans talk a big game about toning down political violence. But last week I called for a vote on my bill that would have given all Americans, including judges and other elected officials like this necessary privacy protections to stay safe. Republicans blocked it.
