TRUTH.

For example, finding an eye-witness account of the Burr-Hamilton duel that seemingly no one else has found…

I didn’t move for hours.

Made it into my dissertation.
Into my first book.
And into the Hamilton musical.

Research, man.
Nothing like putting the pieces together for the first time.
I don't have a specific story at the top of my head, but the experience of picking up a loose piece of paper and realizing when you get to the end of the page that you now know something about the past that literally no other living person knows?

Unbeatable.
I think we need a mega thread of everyone's craziest archive stories.

I think everything in this thread is spot on, but the thing that most non-specialists miss is that individual historians are also the ones who decide there's even something to investigate! Based on their deep reading and expertise, they frame new questions to create new knowledge we didn't have!
A big part of being a historian is being a detective! Who did this? Why? Where? Why does it matter in the grand scheme of things? You have to learn how to probe, how to uncover, how to read against the grain, how to find unusual sources, how to interpret those sources. How to piece together a puzzle
It also robs students of learning *how* to research.

This video will inspire you and break your heart and remind you why we humans have a chance - this is famous Ukrainian ‘Schedryk’ - you might know it as Carol of the Bells - performed live at one of DTEK thermal power situations ruined by Russian attacks

P.s. it will make you cry.

The small, mean world our leaders are building isn’t inevitable. It’s a choice to see immigration as a source of threat rather than possibility. That was part of the story of the lottery that I love, that the admin is trying now to kill.

Dreamland
In a world of border walls and obstacles to migration, a lottery where winners can gain permanent residency in the United States sounds too good to be true. ...

I'm not even going to repost a screengrab of his post about Rob Reiner but man it really needs to be said every single day: Trump truly is the biggest piece of shit in the world, a man of absolutely no good qualities and seemingly limitless bad ones. Support for him is just so damning.

Just posted a new video on my campaign site about the state of the race in the Fifth District--which has clarified in the past week--and what I have to offer that's different.
Why Me?
I discuss the state of the Fifth District race, why I’m running, and what I offer that other candidates aren’t offering.

So the answer to Doocy's question is that this isn't a war about oil or drugs, it's an immigration war.

This is astonishing. Trump just admitted that he is waging war on Venezuela because some of their citizens have migrated to America.
DOOCY: Is the campaign against Venezuela still just about drugs, or it also now about oil?

TRUMP: Well, it's about a lot of things. But one of things it's about is the fact they've allowed millions of people to come into our country from their prisons

"Europe is framed almost exclusively in terms of demographic decline and political malaise, rather than as a region whose stability underpins U.S. strategic posture." This is what you get when American culture determines foreign policy.
New National Security Strategy Is Heavy on Rhetoric, Light on Detail
Without explaining how national means can be used to achieve desired ends, the strategy is just empty rhetoric.

What? China has about 3x (4x now?) as much windpower installed and is now deploying solar and wind far faster than coal -- because they are cheaper
Trump: "China has very few wind farms. You know why? Because they're smart. You know what they do have? A lot of coal ... we don't approve windmills."

Josh Marshall is absolutely right about this as a matter of constitutional restoration BUT ALSO

You can't do ANY of the "kitchen table" agenda EITHER without abolishing the power of the six corrupt GOP justices. They'll kill any good Dem policy (eg student loan forgiveness) just to watch it die.

This 100%
My theory, fwiw, is that Supreme Court Justices are not immune to Twitter brain poisoning. I suspect all six have horrific information environments and have therefore lost the ability to understand the people who don't agree with them.
The part that I can't figure out is what John Roberts thinks he is doing. He used to seem to be a judge who was very attentive to appearances, I think on a theory that you can't draw too much attention to yourself without undermining your ability to continue to shape the law.

The fact that Polis didn't immediately rule this out is incredibly alarming.

If he actually caves to Trump's demand, he could be impeached.
NEW: Colorado's election clerks are increasingly upset that Gov Jared Polis (D) hasn't ruled out releasing Tina Peters to the Trump administration.

On a call today, a bipartisan group of elected clerks said Polis hasn't agreed to meet with them about their concerns.
