Beautiful high-res work from the Delacour lab: a basal supracellular ‘actin-star’ network in intestinal villi. With imaging, ablation and myosin perturbations, they support a tissue-level actomyosin tension scaffold— another great companion to our extrusion findings.

I feel like this is the most rewarding comment I ever got.

Thanks for highlighting this! My background in fly morphogenesis shaped how I think about tissue forces, their interplay with signaling, and experimental design. An experience I’d wholeheartedly recommend — Drosophila remains a rich source of inspiration, continuing to reveal fundamental concepts.

I may have a biased interpretation here, but I suspect the background of @danielkrueger.bsky.social in fly morphogenesis brought a lot here (congrat for the impressive work !) , a good example of virtuous background mixing and work built on important conceptual/technical premise from model organism

This is very complementary with the recent preprint of @xaviertrepat.bsky.social and Maria Matejcic using 2D organoids and providing 3D mechanical characterisation of the process

Important story dissecting the mechanism of gut cell extrusion using organoids. Local heterogeneity of tension promotes live extrusion and basal relaxation is sufficient to kick the cell out. Nice combination of optogenetics and live imaging to demonstrate this

1/11 In @science.org: A new perspective on how our intestines renew. Cells are not “pushed out” by crowding or die from apoptosis. Instead, cells play a mechanical tug-of-war, where weaker cells extrude, reframing gut renewal as force-regulated. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Epithelial tension controls intestinal cell extrusion
Cell extrusion is essential for homeostatic self-renewal of the intestinal epithelium. Extrusion is thought to be triggered by crowding-induced compression of cells at the intestinal villus tip. In th...

Grateful for my time @thecleverslab.bsky.social with @hansclevers.bsky.social to all collaborators @hubrechtinstitute.bsky.social , @amolf-nl.bsky.social & @IHB Basel as well as to MSCA @ec.europa.eu programme for supporting this journey. Couldn’t have done it without the amazing support!

The gut constantly renews itself. Cells keep the tissue under tension, engaging in a tug-of-war. Weaker cells that can’t counter their neighbours’ pull extrude. This maintains mechanical homeostasis, ensuring stability and protecting the intestinal barrier.

Oh yes, we did! Here are our new postcards - educational outreach material that pinpoints challenges in bioimaging #RDM complexity. Turn them around to find out about solutions and support! And all illustrations are free for reuse (CC-BY). doi.org/10.5281/zeno...
Many thanks to Henning Falk!

"The state of German-Polish relations is a European tragedy in the same way that the Warschauer Kniefall was a moment of European reconciliation."
Brilliant analysis by @JeremyCliffe and also an important read before the Polish elections this weekend.

There is so much at stake.
Europe’s east-west divide is widening
Relations between Germany and Poland define the continent. But, ahead of the latter’s election this weekend, they are in crisis and getting worse.
