Hopefully a trend of common sense is taking the lead.
"After the White House called for billions of dollars in funding reductions, senators and representatives are rescinding the proposed cuts and even boosting funds for basic research."

This is the stuff that really bothers me. Stupid policy can be over turned but this has long term affects.

AND ... that means those students probably won't come here to work reducing "brain drain" of other countries which the US has been so good at.
They're so fucking stupid and don't realize it. The only reason many white students can afford graduate degrees is because foreign students pay for the programs and allow them to be economically efficient. Without foreign students, many programs will now simply collapse. Genius.
The White House just blasted this out under the headline "Good News You May Have Missed"

This whole thing today might be what saves the country.
The flew the entire military leadership in so they could see for themselves that the Secretary of Defense is a mouthbreathing dipshit and the Commander in Chief is a senile, weak old man who might keel over at any moment.

This is a great time to remind everyone that EOs aren’t laws, the federal government doesn’t manage voting in this way, and it’s all a scare tactic and any reporting that doesn’t provide that context is enabling potentially lawless activity.
Trump declares intention to issue an Executive Order mandating Voter ID for all votes, restricts mail-in voting to exceptions, and insists on paper ballots only.

Love to see this..
We're taking a big step towards medical superintelligence. AI models have aced multiple choice medical exams – but real patients don’t come with ABC answer options. Now MAI-DxO can solve some of the world’s toughest open-ended cases with higher accuracy and lower costs.

Part of the reason that universal injunctions became so prevalent seems to be because Presidents are increasingly making huge legal/policy changes via executive order. Maybe we can get back to Congress actually making the law and the executive merely enforcing it??

Three things made the US a rich and powerful nation: the rule of law, its science & innovation system, and openness to foreign talent. Remarkable how Trump has taken a sledgehammer to all three. No enemy of this country could do more.

It’s the narcissist’s playbook.

1. Do something bad/stupid

2. Blame someone else (“They (or you) did this/made me do this!”)

3. Loudly claim (usually falsely) to have fixed the problem

4. Take credit for 3 (but never blame for 1) and say “Look what I did for you! You should be grateful!”
So “emergency.” Much “national security.”

Oh wow.

Note: This response (below, which is real) to Trump’s tweet depicting himself as pope is from the New York State Catholic Bishops, who represent the collective bishops of the state.

Among them is Cardinal Dolan of NYC, who Trump appointed to his new religious liberty commission this week.

An excellent article by @matthewfacciani.bsky.social on what steps we can take to start rebuilding trust in science. Quick notes:

1. Be a human (competency and warmth both matter)
2. Say "I don't know"
3. Show up irl (when possible)
4. Own mistakes when they happen

In grand scheme of things, this is minor, but who does this kind of stuff? Just shows mentality and thought process of the white house.
Trump has just replaced President Obama’s official presidential portrait in the White House with a painting of himself.

This is so true.
By attacking science:

We are less safe because science informs national security and medical care.

We are less prosperous because science drives innovation and economic benefit.

We are less free because science and democracy depend on the liberty to ask questions, and seek and share knowledge.
