A paean to privatised public transport.

Today I had to go from Stockport to Salisbury. So I bought a ticket

Stockport > Bristol > Salisbury

The drive to Stockport should have taken 35 minutes. Satnav said it would take 2 hours, and I'd miss my train.

So I went to Macclesfield, where I found...

🗳 From 13 Oct, members in around 100 FE branches will be balloted for industrial action.

The AoC’s 4% offer fails to fix low pay, unmanageable workloads or broken bargaining.

VOTE YES for a #NewDealForFE 💪
✅ Fair pay
✅ Manageable workloads
✅ Binding national bargaining

The structure idea. Example: the group of symmetries of an equilateral triangle is identical to the group of permutations on 3 things. By forgetting about triangles and permutations and studying the group we can find results that will be true in both settings.

The periodic table is en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classif...
It says every finite group is made up of groups that are well known, so every group is like a compound and we know ALL the building blocks.

I would say that Groups are ways of connecting different areas of maths. By studying the structures due to how elements interact we can prove results in multiple applications all at once. That and the 'periodic table' of all groups.

Today we looked at a group on subsets of a set. Lots of discussions about the validity of a proof. And a great question: if I can find an identity for a single element and state that identities are unique then does this show we have an identity for the group?

Reform say it is "disgusting and libellous" to suggest that Nigel Farage flirted with Hitler Youth when he was young.

“Our women, our daughters are scared to walk the streets,” claimed Tommy Robinson at the 'Unite the Kingdom' rally.

Suddenly, the radical right seems concerned about women’s safety - but this isn’t genuine care. They’re recycling an old, racist trope.

Watch and share.

Some good news.

London is meeting legal limits for toxic NO2 pollution for the first time – almost 200 years earlier than predicted – following the Mayor’s "world leading air pollution policies," City Hall announces.

The Ultra Low Emissions Zone - and similar policies - really do work.

Amazing bit of 2019 footage this.

Frei doing a great job of trying to hold Farage to account as he and Nathan Gill go walkabout.

And I suspect Farage will come to regret his quip at the end about Russians if it does the rounds again.

Nathan’s mate Nigel sure did seem to want to brush it all away when questioned by Matt Frei back in 2019.
