Holy crap. Trump will make the FCC crucify Jimmy Kimmel for this.

I wish "antifa" had not gained such widespread usage. If we just said "anti-fascist," then it would be immediately clear to anyone what the opposite of that is.

This is an important video to watch, to understand the problems with "just arrest ICE".

My only questions (really, for the law prof, not her) are about the legal foundations for all of this, and if they could ever possibly be changed in the future. (I'm thinking long term here.)

NEW — Some TRiiBE readers, among many others on the internet, have been suggesting that the Chicago police arrest ICE agents for their misconduct.

TRiiBE publisher @morganelisej.thetriibe.com put out this explainer video, breaking down the legality for y’all.

fucked up that this is all just landlords swatting their own buildings to get rid of all the working class residents so they can raise the rent or sell to a developer who'll flip them into high end condos or w/e

like it's a real estate scam! it's a fucking land grab! a fire for the insurance money!

There’s a lot in here that deserves a pull quote, but this is the most egregious. I need people to recognize the gravity of the situation here in Chicago;

"The ones that are getting out are coming home to no home," Watson said.
According to her, after the raid occurred, building management stole or threw out residents belongings, including visas and important documents.

ICIRR is still trying to determine the identities of all the people detained in the raid. Castro said that the organization usually can do that by following up with family members or loved ones. "In this instance, there was nobody left to work with," she said. The only detainee name they're sure of is that of a person who passed their Venezuelan passport to a neighbor as they were being taken away.

No but "insular narcissists" sounds pretty judgemental & moralizing. Fwiw McLuhan same language of narcissism to describe the effects of mass media 60 years ago, so your complaint seems a bit ahistorical. Not a big deal, just not something I really want to indulge.
daveparisi.bsky.social
Yeah I'm not here for the generational moral panic around media consumption. They haven't seen a movie that was important to me when I was younger. Not a big deal, made it more fun to watch through their eyes as new viewers.

I don't read them not having seen the film before as at all problematic, what a weird thing to suggest.

Yeah I talk a lot about seeing the film in the theater early on & feeling like I was in on a secret that I was obligated not to tell.

You've heard of Head Like A Hole...now, get ready for Face Like A Sphincter.

Definitely. In this context though we're trying to figure out how the film helps them make sense of technology & the politics around it, so that kind of specific predigestion they've done with participatory culture is a little different.
daveparisi.bsky.social
IMO this is tricky but: we discussed the way new readings of films can emerge later as the context around them changes, which has been a theme for us all semester. But ran short on time so picking that discussion up tomorrow.

Oh cool, thanks! Sharing this with them now.

Resurrections isn't a great film, but the scene where they walk through all the different meanings people have made of The Matrix (a fictional game in the film) as they're trying to think about how to do a sequel is pretty fun & we use that to survey the range of perspectives on the film.
daveparisi.bsky.social
This is before we even got deep into the use of "red pilling" as a metaphor for right-wing political awakening, which they all knew of but didn't totally understand the depth of the reference before watching this week.
daveparisi.bsky.social
It's The Matrix week in my class, one big takeaway: only 2 of 18 had seen the film before, but everyone else knew it through memes & vague references to "living in the matrix". Memification of the film's central moments kinda trivialized them, they were watching through the lens of memes.

I've voted for every damn mealy-mouthed useless Dem on every election including midterms and locals since I turned 18. You know who I know dallies with occasional GOP votes or skip "minor" elections? Centrists.

For some reason, libs and dems just assume no one else voted for her unless you're a die hard blue cult follower. I DID vote for her, only cuz she wasn't Shitler, but any even slight criticism I have for dems is met with "you're a magat! You helped trump win! How's that protest vote working out!"

The creation of separate rw media on cable and the internet has over time led to rw dominance within legacy media firms. Extremely effective strategy

It really doesn't make much sense to talk about right-wing media as distinct from legacy or mainstream media at this point.

Just as a reminder, Bondi’s origin story in Trump world is that she said she was going to investigate Trump University, Trump sent her a $25K check and the investigation disappeared. She later became Trump’s personal defense lawyer. So yeah, don’t challenge her integrity.

Just now I discovered that with the acquisition of Amsterdam University Press (AUP) by Taylor & Francis (TF), the eBook version of my book is sold for €41,95 on their website with no OAPEN link available. I hope that this is just a mistake on TF's part and I just contacted them for clarification.

Like there was a time period when right-wing media was insurgent and counterposed to legacy/mainstream media. That time is passed. We need to rethink the terms we use to understand the ongoing asymmetrical ideological struggle over media supremacy.
