Folks might not know a lot of people are getting *very* upset that the materials they request are not available in the libraries/archives they're requesting from.

We're getting lots here at the Library of Virginia: requests of documents likely surfaced by large language models that *do not exist*.

my great-grandparents arrived in the UK in the 1890s with nothing.
they sold pickles from the front room window, took in laundry, worked as tailors.
their children were nurses, teachers, salesmen.
their grandchildren were professors, designers, opticians, doctors, magistrates, entrepreneurs.
This is so disgusting.

Pastries as insults, UK edition, thread.
I love that British people call clueless people a 'donut'. how many other pastry based insults are there (in English or any other language)?

A digital dark age? The people rescuing forgotten knowledge trapped on old floppy disks
From lectures by Stephen Hawking to the letters of British politician Neil Kinnock – it's a race against time to save the historical treasures locked away on old floppy disks.

And here we go. I never wrote this article, and yet it is cited here.

And of course, it sounds so plausible, I seriously checked whether I had forgotten it, or the footnote was slightly wrong.

Regarding the funding gap, etc., this is all true. Still, just the other day, walking home from work, I came across young women from a number of local Ottawa schools playing rugby. The enthusiasm and enjoyment was palpable. Inspiring stuff and wonderful to see. www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-...
Women's Rugby World Cup final: Why England v Canada matters more than you know
It is a match that doesn't need the hype, but England's meeting with Canada in the Women's Rugby World Cup final has taken on an importance that runs to the heart of the game.

For those of you interested in macroeconomic and monetary theory, economics of the everyday, empirical analyses of the Canadian economy, or just political economy generally, WCI (even though it's been largely inactive for a few years now) is a goldmine.

Prominent folks:

Millions stay on Twitter because that's where they hear from you. That includes reporters.

YOU are giving Twitter viability and credibility.

If YOU leave, the people who want to hear from you will go where you are.

YOU are making the choice to keep others on Twitter.

Despite numerous other countries (e.g., Finland, Norway, France) condemning or raising serious objections against the move, the Canadian 🇨🇦 government has been completely silent.

As @markkersten.bsky.social says, we helped build the ICC; our silence is helping to destroy it
bsky.app/profile/mark...
Canada has repeatedly declined to show support for the #ICC as it comes under mounting attack from the US.

It’s now a pattern, not an aberration, & continues even as Canadian citizens are sanctioned.

We helped build the ICC. Our silence is helping to destroy it. @anitaoakvilleeast.bsky.social
We didn’t join other states expressing support for vital work of the ICC & now we are silent as Trump sanctions a Canadian judge on the court. @mark-carney.bsky.social @anitaoakvilleeast.bsky.social is this piteous DT appeasement or has Canada given up on international justice when we need it most?
