but not having a following and your following being in a million different spots and fundamentally not all in the Same spot are two different things. And, no, I do not misunderstand how mastodon or federation works. Yes, you can see other servers. Sometimes. But not always. And it's always limited.

The stratification of it is, by design, something that forces posts to be limited in audience because there is no way to make sure a post is accessible to everyone. This is different from complaining you don't have audience reach, of course; some people just don't got a following, and that's ok

"The purpose of a system is what it does" is an axiom that is universally true and often completely ignored by those designing the systems. By this token, the purpose of mastodon is to show posts to nobody. Not just because nobody is on it, but because it actively, definitionally, stratifies itself.

well yea, yep

unfortunately bluesky is the only platform even passably able to approximate the same thing twitter did right, because it figured out (correctly) that the best thing to do to try to capture that is to just do that again. all the federation stuff is honestly just a big shrug on top.

the thing that was good about twitter before twitter was bought by big boy baby boy was Everyone In One Place, and that's also the thing that's inextricable from what was bad about it. but that made it vital. everyone in one place, flat, totally accessible to everyone else, is a miracle of a thing

paul i love you but this doesn't stop it being true about mastodon, a platform designed around being able to show your posts to nobody. it's forums with extra steps. and i LIKE forums, but i don't need the extra steps.
