Holidate: among the most unhinged holiday films I’ve ever seen. Not uncharming—especially Emma Roberts—but seems unsure of what it’s trying to be: raunchy sex comedy? Family-fun romcom? The tonal whiplash of wild vulgarity and saccharine sweetness, as if the former just hadn’t happened, is jarring.

Years ago I largely abandoned MIDI and DAWs and I’ve mostly not looked back. It was not exactly a conscious decision but I balked at the setup involved, the forethought, the burden of MIDI templates and mapping, the minuscule but noticeable latency, etc.

The Roland SH-101: an excellent synthesizer. The Roland JX-8P: also just a fabulous synth. They sound lovely together. Roland had a knack for developing instruments that were voiced to complement one another beautifully despite—or perhaps because of—their overlapping architectures and feature sets.

Today is the birthday of writer & artist Fletcher Hanks (Dec. 1, 1889-Jan. 22, 1976). He was only active in the comic industry for three years but is remembered for his unique style & unusual creations such as Stardust the Super Wizard & Fantomah.

Knowing nothing about it, but I’m starting a small-batch cassette label (something that seems not so far off from a super indie comics publisher), I’d be curious to know how this plays out in the music world. I’d assume similarly: most stores are bad fits and even the right one is hard to make work.

I genuinely have no idea how to engage with strangers on this app. I see people with my interests talking about things I like and the idea of participating in their conversation seems so fake and forced. This is a uniquely online problem for me. I’m much better in person.
