One thing I talk about in my book is different social norms around argumentation. And the sheer fucking outrage that many feel towards the uncompromising norms in math and the hard sciences around whether something is true or not. They read this as unempathetic and tyrannical.

The Americans Who Saw All This Coming—but Were Ignored and Maligned
Call them the Cassandras: the people—mostly not white and male—who smelled the fascism all over Trump from jump street. Why were they “alarmists,” and how did “anti-alarmism” become cool?

The barges used to reinforce the net/boom defenses in Novorossiysk aren't new and not sunken either.

This is a long time practice. An example from September 4th last year here.

The barges are highly likely moved by tugs and moored inside the base when not in position.

I was going to make a self-deprecating joke but honestly, this is why I hate how obsessed everyone is with the aesthetics of AI. Anything that looks 'off' to a reader or viewer gets flagged as AI. It's shaming people for not matching what someone else thinks is human.

So, we’re banning Chinese drones, and selling AI chips to the Chinese? In order that they can develop smarter drones that we can’t use? OK…

Never occurred to me that people use AI to help them generate prompts to ask AI, but it should have. Some people will do 4x the amount of work as long as it feels like they’re taking a shortcut.

one thing thats crazy about the current era in the states is that it is clear across most domains that science got processed by a lot of people as "traumatic encounter with the real" and now they are just making decisions based on that trauma.

Over many interviews, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told Michael Scherer about how he plans to remake America’s public-health system. Can he lead the scientific establishment he’s spent much of his life crusading against?

as someone says in the replies, there’s a difference between narratives you find PLEASANT and narratives you find VALIDATING. many people are quite attached to dark, terrifying, pessimistic views of the world and find it validating when those views are reinforced. it’s about catharsis not happiness
Actually, no: i've been reading narratives that scare the shit out of me.

And I would be happy to be wrong about everything.

Seriously, what the fuck have you been reading?
