PS: Bluesky has not been interested in engaging with civil society meaningfully yet, and a 2 week timeline for commenting on their standards when a lot of people were probably not working doesn’t cut it., before someone bemoans the people “harassing the CEO.”

Oops, CEO of Bluesky mocking people asking why dangerous transphobes aren’t being banned.

Starting the countdown in my mind to this site being unusable for me. Glad I didn’t get too comfortable, and I hope I‘m wrong.

Canada and the UK's new immigration laws are blatant attempts to suck up to the fascist United States dictator, and it will not end well for us.

Labour has closed existing safe routes for refugees, weakened protections for trafficking victims, is undermining international human rights law, and is now denying people trapped in countries they face persecution the ability to join loved ones. There is nothing defensible about any of this.

UK anti-slavery commissioner condemns Shabana Mahmood's asylum comments

Home secretary's remarks about 'vexatious' claims will have real-life impact on trafficking victims, says Eleanor Lyons

Thu 18 Sep 2025 10.50 BST

The anti-slavery commissioner has criticised the home secretary, Shabana Mahmood, for accusing asylum seekers of making "vexatious last-minute claims" relating to modern slavery.

The commissioner, Eleanor Lyons, said the comments were "deeply concerning" and would have "a real-life impact" on trafficking victims. He added "we need to look again at the interpretation" of a wide range of international laws by UK courts.

He warned that laws must be "applied in the circumstances as they are now" before adding that countries were experiencing "mass migration in a way that we have not seen in previous years".

To meet this new challenge "we need to look at again at the interpretation of some of these provisions, not tear them down", he said.

He added: "I believe that those genuinely fleeing persecution should be afforded asylum and that is a compassionate act."

Pressed for details about what was blocking deportations of foreign criminals, Sir Keir cited Articles 3 and 8 of the ECHR - which ban torture and protect the right to private and family life respectively.

"But it's more than that," he said, pointing to the UN's Refugee Convention, Torture Convention and Convention on the Rights of the Child as potential barriers. Starmer to end asylum 'golden ticket' of resettlement and family reunion rights

People granted asylum will have to earn right to invite family in plan charities call 'straight from populist playbook'

People granted asylum will no longer be given "the golden ticket" of resettlement and family reunion rights, Keir Starmer said, amid deepening concerns from charities that his words are demonising refugees.

As the prime minister prepared to discuss illegal migration with European leaders, No 10 outlined plans to strip successful claimants of the right to automatically invite spouses and children to join them.

Incredible that these little fascist toddlers are passing laws to protect lawmakers (who have access to security) from doxxing. Many of the people they are so “scared of”, like myself, survived doxxing attempts with no help at all ten years ago and the same people tried to gaslight our concerns.

About Joint Terrorism Task Forces; I mentioned them months ago. They directly enlist local law enforcement to the FBI chain of command, and blur federal/local lines. Some cities pulled out of JTTFs, but most likely yours hasn’t. <5/?> www.techpolicy.press/ai-surveilla...

AEDPA also established the crime of “material support” to terrorist. When 9/11 happened, nearly all the structures were in place to create the modern national security state ( including the Joint Terrorism Task Forces central to Trump’s fascist “countering domestic terrorism” order.) <3/?>
dia.bsky.social
AEDPA is a pre 9/11 law inspired by the 1995 attack committed by Timothy McVeigh, which was then used almost exclusively to limit access to habeas corpus and set up the modern system of terrorist designations.

McVeigh, a white man, inspired this racist, biased system years before 9/11. <2/?>

“You Have Not Yet Been Defeated“
Those words have been ringing in my head the least 24 hours, often followed by tears of joy.

I’ve never met Alla, but maybe now I will, someday.

The “you” includes all the people who never gave up fighting for him.

It worked. It really worked. Thank you.

I'm not the first to notice the reinvention of @wired.com from mouthpiece of tech ideology to showing everyone else how to do journalism today, but this cover is something else.

The inclusion of their own hagiographic covers in the back is a nod to that shift, which is beautiful. Also…

Big Tech's embrace of President Trump has left many of us wondering: What the hell happened to Silicon Valley?

In our new politics issue, we're getting into it.

Also, we're taking this cover across the US in billboards, posters and a mural. Clues to find us in the 🧵: www.wired.com/politics-iss...

Shout out to all the cis women out there responding to people calling them trans as a slur with “So what if I am?”

I see you, putting yourself at risk out there. That’s showing up for trans people for real.

I”m scared for my autistic friends in the US.
Even more for my trans autistic friends in the US.
I don’t know any undocumented trans autistic people personally but I’m really really fucking scared for them ( and grateful for the mutual aid work still happening in the US).

I’m really not looking forward to how whatever the administration announces will be used to dehumanize autistic people even further.

If they really cared about autistic people, they’d be doing what is necessary to support those of us who are living rather trying to prevent our existence.

If you can, learn about mass defense— strategic defense of people arrested for activism —and how it works. Check if there’s a legal hotline and observers where you live. And finally, don’t be afraid to ask questions about how anyone (including legal support) stores your personal data. <2/2>

It’s a good idea to known how to talk to a lawyer, and know a little bit about movement lawyering.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions about strategy, even if you’re working with a public defender who may not have experience with political cases. <1/2>

If you get arrested at a protest, and you need to fight a charge, who's your lawyer? A public defender may represent you at arraignment. (Love you, PDs!)

Afterward, usually it's an NLG lawyer, working for free. The NLG Chicago needs your support.

(ACLU doesn't do crim defense, with exceptions.)

Great reporting on one of the moments that should have warned us. The Arab Spring saw a moment when we thought tech would liberate people, then like a dream that moment passed. Today Myanmar is sunk deeper than ever in horrors, riven by civil war, while countless people are pressed into slavery.
