One of the most perverse ideas on the anti-trans side is that trans people are instantly affirmed and celebrated by everyone when they come out and that acceptance is driving a social contagion.

It's the ultimate form of gaslighting against our community.

Pew Survey: Only 31% Of Trans People Report Being Accepted By Their Parents
The survey comes as transgender people experience a legal assault from the far-right in the United States.

You should definitely print a new run in time for holiday presents. Just saying.

Old Twitter and BkueSky helped me connect to my geoscience and science peeps! Project collaborations have happened because of this, IRL friendships have been made and 600+ nerds found and bought my LiDAR-derived scale-model volcano tissue box covers. (Maybe I should print a new run soon).

This was IN MY ADULT LIFETIME.

Electoral maps are not stable over time and anyone proposing we cut ties with red state America has not seriously grappled with that reality.

God the 1992 house election looks so weird, almost fake

One of the things I love about it is that the MC is a mother...and I think you will appreciate it for that very reason! MC is a kick-ass pirate captain, but even she took time off after her daughter was born...it's fine to give yourself a little space while Bean is small.

Oh, you definitely have to read this one! It is so amazing!

Never forget that Dolly Parton gave a million bucks for covid research at the *very start* of the pandemic—including money that helped fund the development of the Moderna vaccine.

I can't tell you how privileged I felt to get an actual startup budget when I moved to NMU.
diygeochemist.bsky.social
Some people say, "Oh, I thought you did DIY in geochemistry" and...well...let me just say that I considered myself LUCKY if my research budget was $800/year at my last school. I kludged together so much shit to make my research program work. I impress myself sometimes.

explain your username:

I have been doing DIY home repair since 1998 when my ex and I bought our first house...plus DIY-ing all sorts of stuff even before that.

Started out as DIY Robin on some platforms, then switched to diygeochemist in grad school (when studying geochemistry).

explain your username:

short version: it’s my author pen name

long version: I was going by the initials “CM” on a message board for writers, because it stood for “Chicken Mafia.” People knew me as CM and then suddenly I needed a real name for human interaction purposes.
misskittyf.bsky.social
explain your username:

I started going by “Miss Kitty Fantastico” online when I started watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer as a teenager, but that was often too longer for a username on a lot of sites, so I shortened it to “misskittyf.” It’s stuck for nearly 20 years now.

Over the weekend, I learned of the death of a fellow employee. The first response to the news- over Teams- was a list of university-owned devices that needed to be returned to IT.

Work does not love you back. Act accordingly.

happy sunday, remember that you are completely expendable to your employer and that when you die they will forget you ever existed within weeks and easily replace you
Work really hard and one day this can be you (followed by graffiti of a headstone that says “RIP worked really hard” on it

Will my kids be able to afford houses in the cities they currently live in, houses large enough that I can move in with them? Also no.
diygeochemist.bsky.social
Cities I would enjoy retiring in:

1) Seattle
2) San Francisco
3) Denver

Can I afford any of those? Hell no.
diygeochemist.bsky.social
Anyway, I have a few cities picked out where I would be willing to live. Options are limited by affordability though--we need more affordable senior housing in cities.

My next-door neighbor was in her 80's when she had to give up her car. She had friends driving her to activities, appointments, shopping, etc. because public transportation was not reliable.

This was not sustainable.
diygeochemist.bsky.social
Public transportation is key to allowing elderly (and disabled folks) to live without a car.

Which is why I will be moving post-retirement, even though I enjoy where I live now.

Do we have public transportation? Technically. But it sucks.
courtneymilan.com
So in addition to societal things like getting licenses yanked, we need options so that elderly people can keep doing things to maintain their physical and mental health.

Have I heard it yet? Not specifically.

But at my last school, the whole vibe from administration/BoT of "you should just be grateful you have a job" (as they asked us to do more and more for the same minimal salary) made me want to collapse sometimes.

Putting aside the question of AI personhood, a slur requires a history of dehumanization.

In order to fuction, the slur has to call into being that history of dehumanization for its injurious force. There is no such history for LLMs, regardless of claims otherwise.

how about you care about actual fucking people on this planet before you start wondering if your toaster has a soul.

Once everyone materially demonstrates they care for all people on this planet and we deal WITH ALL THAT and all the animals too

then we can talk about your nonsense.
