If you're wondering about the vibe in Canada right now, I just got served this ad for a brewhouse that is just a portrait of the White House being burned down. No text, just a bigass picture of the White House burning and a link directly to their menu lolol
A gorgeous portrait of the White House entirely aflame, the smoke billowing and the flames lighting up the night sky. It sparks deep patriotic ferver. This is what democracy looks like.

Also there's a white button with blue text below the portrait. The text reads "Learn more" and if clicked it takes you to the menu of a local brewhouse.

We aren't on the verge of an authoritarian takeover. We are in the middle of it.

But I worry people don't see the whole scheme. They just pay attention to each new daily outrage. So I went to the Senate floor to explain Trump's plan.

Here's a 🧵of the speech. It's important.

TRANSCRIPT OF CARTOON

This cartoon has four panels.

PANEL 1

A car and a pickup truck are pulled over on the side of an overpass. There’s an exit ramp with white and green stripes going across it, which in some cities indicates pedestrian and bicyclist crossings. The driver of the car, a woman in an orange top, is walking towards the driver of the pickup, who has gotten out of the truck. He's wearing a blue cap and a red tshirt.

WOMAN: Hey there. I see you're pulled over. You need me to call for help?MAN: Thanks. I'm having the worst day ever!

PANEL 2

A closer shot of the truck driver as he rants. His face is framed by two yellow caution signs with bicycle icons and arrows pointing to the green and white crosswalk lines. The concerned woman is behind him.

MAN: I was just driving along and bam! A bike came out of nowhere! No chance for me to see it coming! Stupid bike riders think they own the road!

PANEL 3

Looking worried, the man points to a dent on his truck's front grill.

MAN: I got a big truck so I'd be safe on the road — and see what happens? Just look at this ding on my truck!

PANEL 4

From the ground in front of the truck, a hand comes up, forefinger raised to get attention. The woman is shocked; the man is annoyed.

BIKER (weak shaky voice): Sorry to interrupt but could you call me an ambulance?MAN: Hey! It's not all about you!

CHICKEN FAT WATCH

Chicken fat is obsolete cartoonists' lingo for unimportant but amusing details in the art.

PANEL 2: A highway sign says "Highway to Heck." The font is called "Highway Gothic."(“Highway to heck” is a reference to a Foxtrot comic. “Some songs just weren’t made for Muzak.” “Some ears weren’t, either.”)

PANEL 3: The logo on the front of the truck says "Dodge SLAM."

Toronto Council meets today! It's their first meeting since July, so we're all feeling a bit rusty. Mayor Chow has designated an item about — what else? — speed cameras as her first key matter, so that'll be up first.

no they're LITERALLY exaggerating this issue. there is absolutely no data backing up their claims. ffs just say that!!
NBC news: The discussions come as Trump has sought to deploy National Guard troops in several major cities — including Los Angeles, Chicago and Portland, Oregon — saying they’re needed to reduce crime and protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials from protesters. Critics have said that the Trump administration is exaggerating issues in those cities.

I think that's accurate; that's part of my thinking here. It's not possible to be bigoted against an object like a car or a computer. Being "rude" to a machine does not activate bigotry circuits (you can argue that it's still mentally bad and I'd lean towards agreeing, though the harm is self-harm)
djdynamic.ca
I mean again I do swear exclusively at things and not at people and it is not difficult at all because those two categories are very different in my brain, so I am not sure I agree with that claim (I do agree with your point re: habit and it generally being better not to do so)
djdynamic.ca
I do not think people are saying that to their computers, and I do not think it is possible to be bigoted against a machine which has no sentience.

I will agree that people shouldn't be using "clanker" at humans, even ironically, or any negative expressions re: inherent traits.
djdynamic.ca
It's not the word that's the problem though, it's the intent and the target.

I say "F you" to my computer regularly. I never say it to my kid. Same word, different circumstance.

People calling machines "clanker" or any other combination of words does zero harm; obviously doing it to humans is bad!

I hate to keep picking on The Hub, but there is such a bizarre, mythologized version of Alberta’s oil history as purely free-market triumph at play here - omitting everything from AOSTRA to to TMX, with lots in between (and even before). thehub.ca/2025/10/07/r...

As the federal government is abandoning critical climate protections, Washington's leadership is needed now more than ever. This is an important win.
