took a few days off for my brain and one pretty alarming observation i have is just how easy it is to not hear about the bad stuff that is happening if you don't explicitly dip into specific information streams (not a new problem but feels orders of magnitude more siloed than even 2-3 years ago)

Systemic classism and racism should be understood in many ways, including the part where we spend huge resources protecting the wealthy from any potential threat and basically nothing on protecting the marginalized from being preyed upon by scammers operating right in front of our faces.

Fourty-four years after the official end of the US aparthied regime, a Black man was elected president. The people in favor of aparthied states took that very personally. That's what the "tea party" was about, remember those guys? They used to march with burning effigies of the Obamas.

The institutional Democratic Party is guided by an almost pathological level of conflict avoidance in almost every direction. “What can we do to make the least number of people mad?” is just a bankrupt way to operate.

The NIH cuts are being spun as a way to eliminate bloated university bureaucracy. And looking at the sheer numbers, I get it.

But in fact the story is the exact opposite. The federal research grants system is highly efficient. And it super charges American innovation. 🧵

What are the Democrats doing right now to resist all this, you ask?

Don't worry, their best and brightest are currently negotiating a bipartisan deal to sanction the ICC for issuing arrest warrants for genocidaires.

Now that's how you defend democracy.

Trump has signed an executive order eliminating all funding for diversity and inclusion in the federal government, sending home DEI staff who will then be laid off. The historical echo for this is when Woodrow Wilson resegregated the federal government in 1913. We have reached the second nadir.

Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.
