I used to be more laissez-faire— let people gas themselves up a little bit, bolster their friends, etc— but I think there’s people genuinely driving themselves to distress with repeated exposure to brazen bullshit, and in unnecessary ways. Feel free to ignore him for a few days, gang.

This reminds me of Cardinal John Henry Newman's book Definition of a Gentleman. I often cite Newman's book because it's so instructive. The term gentleman is so overwrought and frequently abused, but to the degree it means anything at all, I think Newman captures it here:
