Hi BlueSky - I’m a biologist and scientific illustrator open to commissions of scientific figures, illustrations, infographics, etc.
I’ve designed infographics about forest tree breeding, love drawing plants and silly characters for fun,
and also made a logo for @pyhatanja.bsky.social

An infographic illustrating the concept of genetic gain.
Genetic gain is the change of the average phenotypic value between the parent and offspring populations due to selection.
For a given trait (e.g. tree height), the frequency distribution has a peak around the mean and tails of extreme values.
In the offspring generation, the distribution is shifted to desired direction as a response to selection.
Genetic gain realised in forest reproductive materials is further modified by other factors such as pollen contamination in seed orchards. A comic style illustration of 4 species of European owls (sizes not to scale). Top left: eagle owl (Bubo bubo); bottom left: tawny owl (Strix aluco); top right: barn owl (Tyto alba); bottom right: snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) The logo for Prof. Tanja Pyhäjärvi's research group. They are based at the University of Helsinki and study forest genomics and breeding.
The logo includes a distribution of fitness effects (a graphic representation of the mutation effects on the organism), a pine cone to symbolize plant reproduction, letters of genetic code (ATCG), and 0/1 numbers to signify numerical methods. The new Wiley journal review system is an absolute nightmare. Editorial assistants have been replaced by a clunky, AI-enabled website that makes it harder to find and invite reviewers. Associate editor workloads have increased. I'm not convinced the invitations to reviewers are even going through.

It’s here! Such a thrill to hold the book in my hands: “The Communicating Scientist” with my illustrations inside. It’s the kind of book I wish I had when I was a PhD student, and I’m glad to have it as a reference as a communications professional #SciComm 🧪

OMG, I get a book launch!

And not just any old book launch - this one is hosted by @tomrocksmaths.bsky.social. I have therefore challenged myself to find a *single fun fact linking ecology, maths and communication* for the event - show up, in person or online, to find out what it is.

📘 'The Communicating Scientist' is here! A practical guide for researchers, science professionals, or students looking to communicate more clearly and effectively in academia. bit.ly/4lNIjAu #SciComm #BookSky @joannabagniewska.com
The Communicating Scientist

It’s written for scientists and professionals who want to make their ideas resonate with their colleagues, peers, or the public.
I’m proud to have contributed to the visuals of this book, and I hope it will serve as a valuable resource for anyone eager to communicate science more effectively!

The Communicating Scientist is a practical, hands-on guide that:
- Shares practical, hands-on experience in a task-oriented way
- Integrates knowledge, insights, and tricks of the trade from seasoned communicators
- Covers both peer-to-peer scientific communication and broader science dissemination

This book is very special to me. The late Olle Bergman was my communications mentor, a person who cared deeply about advancing science and its public perception with impactful communication. Many of the figures were initially designed by him, and I had the privilege of building upon his ideas

LOOK! We made a book, distilling our collective #scicomm experience into a mere 295 pages. Phew.
Yes, it's published by the academic @springernature.com, but it's also conversational, practical and fun, and includes both general advice and specific tips for 24 communication scenarios.

I've also been thinking of Lysenko recently, and the history lesson of how pseudoscience in service of a totalitarian regime destroyed tens of millions of lives. Rasmussen makes that comparison sharper by holding Lysenko's pseudoscientific journey up to Bhattacharya's.

Привет, товарищи! It’s another glorious day in which Trump’s America is increasingly indistinguishable from Stalinist Russia, so I thought an armchair comparative analysis was in order.

Specifically about Jay Bhattacharya's twin from times past, Trofim Lysenko.

Essay which clearly outlines the scientific and ethical problems with selecting embryos for polygenic traits. Scientists associating themselves with embryo selection companies, and those who’ve previously defended sociogenomics but are staying silent on these companies, come in for criticism here
Imagine a world in which a very effective polygenic score for depression is developed, and it really takes off. Everyone starts reproducing that way, and selecting embryos to try to protect their kids from depression.
What would happen? We have no effing idea what would happen. That means embryo selection companies face a dilemma: they can rely on the fact that polygenic scores for behavior don't work well enough to make a difference one way or another, or they are conducting unregulated experiments on human babies, never mind the human genome at large.

I haven't promoted this list in a while because every time I do, it attracts theft apologists and other deranged commenters. I have a thick skin for these things but sorting through the comments gets tedious.

But I assure you people still report things via DM and I still maintain the list daily.

I was complaining about a fake nature account yesterday but usually I don't see them because I use this excellent block list. It's run by some one I trust and keeps lots of annoying accounts off my timeline. 10/10 Definitely recommend.
