Watching TV with the 3yo, I just sat up and let out an audible "oooh!" when Blippi drove up in a sensible pumper fire truck the size of a large delivery van, then a groan when (of course) it turns out he's at a fire station in France.

Which of course faces its own political framing issue, but IMO the opposition to explicit transfer payments comes from a very different place than the opposition to explicit additional taxes on specific choices, even if they net out to the same thing (and also the same as neutral rates w/ credits)

What policy wonk wants to ditch tax credits in favor of explicitly differential tax rates? I thought the naive economist view was just to administer your welfare and subsidies as separate programs (or through the SSA) and take them out of the tax code entirely?

This is such an underappreciated point. So much of the genuine magic of markets is blunted, and indeed perverted to produce suffering rather than flourishing, when the demand curve is defined by *ability* to pay rather than *willingness* to pay.
bencates.bsky.social
A fun little corollary is that the resource allocation role that economists get rightly hot and bothered about markets being able to solve works better the more broadly the purchasing power is spread out. That means confiscatory taxes and redistribution.

TL;DR true capitalism has never been tried.

Sweating some minced onions in the crock pot first is one often-omitted easy step that IMO makes that dip way better and closer to a restaurant-quality queso, but other than that dead on.

I think this article may have single-handedly changed my mind on idling... also a good simple background on where it originated, which I sort of fuzzily knew of but the detail of the history is interesting.

I mean I think that's what "leaning into it" would look like: "Yes you're right that government is currently rigged in favor of the rich, here's exactly how it happened and who did it, vote for us to see the problems fixed and the perpetrators prosecuted."

The UK is within spitting distance of having more murders portrayed annually on TV shows and movies set in the country than occur in real life
michaelhobbes.bsky.social
It's so incredible how low homicide rates are in Europe. The UK, with a population of 70 million people, had fewer than 600 murders in 2023.

Makes me feel a little less insane to see exactly my first thought when I heard TX was sending its guard to invade other states in print.

Texas once feared a phantom federal occupation. Now Gov. Abbott’s troops are helping carry it out under Trump. And Houston may be next, writes the Houston Chronicle editorial board. bit.ly/48Q3D5C

OK I'm back to real-time on Miami-FSU after some ninja FF-ing on the DVR after a perfectly-timed halftime bedtime with the 3yo.

"nearly all 12 apostles" is so good. So subtle. The thinking man's clickbait. 95% chance it's just everyone but Judas but I gotta know.

"You need a coffin? I got a coffin guy."
Screenshotted excerpt from QT'd article:

"Rodriguez's property includes several lots on Delmar Street. His home, across the street from the hanging mannequins, is cluttered with Halloween decorations. Red eyes from gigantic skeletons glow. Spooky music plays from hidden speakers. Nooses and ghosts hang from his trees as animatronic zombies pop out of coffins (Rodriguez says he gets his coffins from a buddy who owns a funeral home). His truck, parked next to the controversial display, has a skeleton attached to the bumper as if he had just run it over. Rodriguez said despite threats, he feels safe in his community."

Wait so it's not even a teen real estate developer? It's just local rich middle-aged guy was *formerly* a teen who liked AC/DC? AC/DC loving teen becomes $35M estate developer...eventually?? This is like not even clickbait garbage, it aspires to that.
drewgriz.bsky.social
Yeah this seems fake, but whoever made it did a great job. Terrific rage-bait.

Also Subway bread famously smells terrible!

Lots of grocery stores had live lobster tanks around that time, the joke is that no one ever actually bought them, which is probably why you don't see many of them anymore. The Central Market by me has one, and the only time I ever interact with it is when my 3yo wants to name them.

This is a great point I had never considered before. Without Buc-ees you don't have the big new Prasek’s or Weikel's locations, either.

Mamdani will win even harder if he promises that he will hire Adams on to just give daily press conferences where he can ramble about rat Jedis and how telekinesis is a problem in the dog community and such
