The mesoscale assistant position is the “entry” position into SPC operations, if that’s what you’re interested in!

And here's the Mesoscale Assistant Forecaster position. This is an entry-level severe weather forecaster position, so if you've ever wanted to see your name on an MCD or on the day 1 outlook, here's your opportunity. This also closes on Wednesday, Sep 24.

This is AI2ES, my AI institute. No way around it other than to say this is really awful. We are doing so many amazing things! We want to keep doing amazing things but without this level of funding, we will not be able to do so.

Another blow to meteorological R&D this morning, as it was confirmed that NSF is terminating funding for its main weather and earth science focused AI research institute led by the Univ. of Oklahoma. Also - a LOT of weather to talk about, especially in the West. More: https://tinyurl.com/mr2znbdb

DOE's embarrassment of a "climate science" report is 150 pages where as this response from the scientific community is 500.

My take: It takes much more effort to refute nonsense than it does to generate it, a tax on the time of all who care about fact and accuracy

Part of the application for currently open National Weather Service positions (since DOGE fired hundreds). They are now testing for political alignment (see question 3), despite the fact that the NWS is completely non-political. This is a job that literally deals with saving lives and property.
Portion of NWS application, including question on how applicant would help advance the president’s EOs and policy priorities.

One more effort to politicize federal grantmaking.

🚨🚨 I've independently confirmed with @NOAA that they received a late-breaking notice from @DeptofDefense that SSMIS data will continue to flow for the remainder of the lifespan of the satellites. I will be updating my reporting shortly. Here is the official NOAA statement 👇
NOAA statement issued July 29, 2025: NOAA will continue to have access to data from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program for the duration of the Program’s life span. The DMSP is a single dataset in a robust suite of hurricane forecasting and modeling tools in the NWS portfolio. Current forecast models continue to include data from:
•	GOES and other geostationary Earth-observing satellites
•	Polar-orbiting satellites, including Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) and EUMETSAT MetOp
•	Hurricane Hunter aircraft reconnaissance missions and other aircraft-based observations
•	Observations on the ground and from buoys
•	Radiosondes and supplemental upper air soundings
•	Ground-based weather radar sites in the U.S. and neighboring countries
In particular, the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS), currently flying on NOAA’s JPSS, provides the richest, most accurate satellite weather observations available. NOAA’s data sources are fully capable of providing a complete suite of cutting-edge data and models that ensure the gold-standard weather forecasting the American people deserve.

For more information regarding DSMP, please reach out to the Department of Defense.

Every time I open LinkedIn, someone from a science agency shares an unplanned (forced) early retirement or RIF. Lately it’s NASA & EPA. In spring, NOAA. I think people have no idea how deep this loss really is. I don’t know what rebuilding federal science looks like, but it won’t be simple or quick.

Rümeysa Öztürk describes the library in the prison where she was held for 45 days for co-authoring an op-ed
After many requests, I finally accessed what turned out to be the saddest and smallest library I have ever seen. I was surprised to find that the books were not categorized by author or Dewey number but size. I tried to find a book before my allotted time ended and picked a cooking book; the second time I got a novel. I began flipping through the pages in search of solace, as books have always been my safe haven. To my surprise, I discovered handwritten notes scattered throughout the book, dated and written by various detainees over time. These messages were filled with reminders of hope, strength, and the assurance that this, too, shall pass. Tears welled up in my eyes as I read their heartfelt expressions. It’s incredible how human beings can find ways to uplift each other, transcending time, space, and borders if they want to and if they choose to. I continued to turn the pages, holding on to the hope of finding brighter moments in this terrifying situation—all thanks to the kindness of people I had never met.

NEW: In an unprecedented move, the NIH will soon disinvite dozens of scientists about to take positions on advisory councils that make final decisions on grant funding.

NIH staff were told to select others aligned with the Trump administration and told to expect placements by political appointees.
Exclusive: NIH to dismiss dozens of grant reviewers to align with Trump priorities
The move would undo years of work, leaving advisory councils understaffed, and without the full expertise needed for reviews.

The Trump administration's proposed budget would slash NOAA's climate research funds.

It still has to pass Congress, but it's already affecting scientists. A program supporting promising new climate scientists furloughed its current cohort and canceled 2025 awards.

Don’t get me wrong. We absolutely need a full budget to pass for all of our scientific agencies. But now, we may be fighting the courts to get to use it.
