The local Chicago press continues to outshine national outlets in their coverage of the absurdity, cruelty and idiocy of the Trump/Miller/Bovino immigration boondoggle. This story is worth reading from beginning to end.
“We felt less than human.” How government treats folks in custody is not a lot better than how they treat them when they’re released. A moment from the story of a server helping a man: “May God bless that woman, because she gave me a taco and a Coke.” www.chicagotribune.com/2025/12/28/c...

President Donald Trump’s federal immigration enforcement operation led to most surreal autumn in Chicago history. What happened during those 64 days will be remembered for a long time.

One of my (not very original) theories about American historical memory is that the desire to lift up the founders inhibits our ability to successfully frame subsequent legal revolutions as pro democracy reforms. We end up arguing about the founder’s intent and the constitution’s language
ICYMI: I introduced a package of legislation to reform American democracy by increasing the size of the United States Senate and House of Representatives, as well as restoring the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction to better align with Article III of the US Constitution. Read more:

My distressingly earnest take on a lot of stuff is that the real divide in politics is by people who are ultimately driven by love and joy and those who are primarily driven by hate and anger. Each finds different objects, policies and directions, but the chasm is between rather than among each side

Yes we must reinstate the ACA subsidies Trump & the GOP cut. Without them, premiums skyrocket.

As we do so, we must also move toward Medicare for All. Unified, non-fragmented health care is the only long-term sustainable model that doesn’t screw patients.

I’ll continue to work toward that system.
My family grew up in a backwoods province in Canada. They still had better health care than California
OPINION: My mother’s home province of Saskatchewan instituted the first single-payer health care plan in North America in 1947. If they can do it, so can California, Roger Rudick writes.

A public service (immigration enforcement) makes normal life impossible.
The right wing tells a story about undocumented immigrants exploiting America, but the truth is closer to the opposite. They perform the tasks we won't while we systematically deny them health care, retirement, or normalcy.
