I had to check multiple shots from multiple angles to confirm that this was, in fact, just a sunflower seed hanging from the duck's bill and not some new fanged species of duck. Nice try, 2025.

It's #WoodDuckWednesday and the Wood Ducks in the park have reappeared after sneakily hiding somewhere with their babies most of the summer. This lovely female declined to divulge their hiding spot. 🪶

Monday again! I hope for a calm week with lots of spring sunshine and time spent in the garden. This beauty was floating elegantly on the Hilltop Wildlife lake at Wisley yesterday. #birds 🌱

The mallard or wild duck is a dabbling duck that breeds throughout the temperate and subtropical Americas, Eurasia, and North Africa. It has been introduced to New Zealand, Australia, Peru, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, the Falkland Islands, and South Africa. Mallards are large ducks with hefty bodies, rounded heads, and wide, flat bills. Like many “dabbling ducks” the body is long and the tail rides high out of the water, giving a blunt shape. In flight their wings are broad and set back toward the rear. Male Mallards have a dark, iridescent-green head and bright yellow bill. The gray body is sandwiched between a brown breast and black rear. Females and juveniles are mottled brown with orange-and-brown bills. Both sexes have a white-bordered, blue “speculum” patch in the wing.
