Well, it's officially that time of year, so here's the piece I wrote for @riotfest.bsky.social in 2019 about why Christmas music is good, actually. There's a pretty good playlist at the bottom of the article, too.

From Naughty to Nice: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Christmas Music
So, you hate Christmas music. I totally get it, and I was once like you. Things, however, have changed.

If you're looking for a hate-read this Thanksgiving, this opinion piece is mercifully short but will still make you want to punch something. Its shitty prose and poor support for its thesis also gives easy fuel to its obvious counterpoint.

Don't know if I'm actually making a 2025 favorites list, but if I do, this is on it. I almost definitely won't do a RANKED list, but if I did, this would be right around the top spot. Great band and great folks.
Your response to Visible Light has been overwhelming. It’s been two months since our debut album has entered the world, and it means so much to see the music reaching people. Thank you for listening. visible-light.bandcamp.com/album/songs-...

In the pre-streaming days, even the best TV shows (Simpsons, Cheers, Twin Peaks, etc) would take awhile to refine their characters and find their stride. 'Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman' hit the ground at a proto-Lynchian sprint and rarely let up. It's Norman Lear's masterpiece. youtu.be/zQqHAWWKwcw?...

I have 99.9% boycotted Starbucks for 25 years because the company and their coffee has been ass the whole time, but I stand with the employees and support more mass actions!
Zohran Mamdani says that New York City stands with Starbucks employees!

He points out their CEO made 96 billion last year.

That’s 6,666 times the median Starbucks worker salary.

Boycott Starbucks. Support the workers. Demand they receive a living wage.

it doesn’t get any clearer that america’s betrothal to fossil fuels is about letting energy companies pick our pockets to prop up their obsolete industry

I more or less want to transition back into food/drink/bud service when I return to PDX next spring, but if I stay in marketing, I really hope it's with a company that has some semblance of structure or strategy in that department (btw, looking for work there next May if ya hear anything).

It has been positively KILLING me lately to not be back working where I belong: a cluttered, musty used record store. An infinite number of worse things happening in this broken world, I know, but it would still be nice if that one tiny wrong could be righted.

Was excited to have an eleventh hour guaranteed addition to my favorite music of 2025, but it's not actually out until January. Anyway, this is an unbeatable, heady lineup and I can't wait to hear the whole thing.

The problem with listening to Tuluum Shimmering is that it gets me too excited to play music myself so I rarely get through those long tracks in one sitting at home.

Last week, I indulged in the best deal in entertainment: $12 for all in-print minicomics from Matt Feazell's NOT AVAILABLE COMICS. It's a big stack, some stretching back to right before I was born. Eternally charming, and a MASSIVE influence on me since 1994.

Feels weird to say since he's a homie, but Fred Thomas can completely murder me with one line. For modern songwriters, hard to beat.

Also, not be a boomer, but Dylan, Joni, Neil, Carole, Sir Paul (among others): all still alive. That dull millennial solipsist isn't even in her generation's Top 20.
I also need to know: I am fairly middle-of-the-road on Taylor Swift but someone I know called her the Greatest Living Lyricist. She is not.

Who is yours? Either the greatest or your favorite?
